Mangalore, Feb 12: Students of various colleges in the city will boycott classes and stage a protest march on February 22, to express solidarity with those opposing the proposed Yettinahole project.

The decision was taken at the meeting convened by college presidents of different units. Most of the colleges on February 22 are likely to remain closed, with students walking the streets demanding to drop the project.

Addressing a press meet here on Wednesday February 12, Suratkal block Congress president Vijay Kumar Shetty said, "We are facing shortage of supporters, we need every person to join hands with us and fight for this cause. So far we were protesting in peace, but now we will start a huge movement regarding this issue.

"Four MLAs from Dakshina Kannada are supporting us and they had joined us in a protest held in Bangalore last month. Due to less number of supporters we are organising a protest and calling for an all-college bandh on Saturday, February 22 at 10 am from Jyothi circle to DC office. Further action will be taken through legal means," he said.

"We had trusted our government, but in the cabinet meeting they did consider the Yettinahole project," he said.

The protest has been organized to convey a strong message to the state government on youth rising against the project prior to the foundation stone laying ceremony. However, it is said that the state government is planning to lay foundation stone at Chikballapur on February 25.

Students from different colleges will stage a protest march till DC office and submit a memorandum demanding state government to withdraw the project.

All College Student Union president Rakshith K Poojary said that the students who are staying in the hostels are already facing shortage of water.

Speaking to daijiworld, Rakshith K Poojary said that the protest would witness as many as 3,000 students descending on the streets. This could be a one of the biggest protests by youths to protect the lifeline of the district, he said.

The protest is being supported by Karavali Jeevanadi Netravati Samrakshana Samiti.

M G Hegde, Denis D'Silva, Shashiraj Hegde, Sahaj Rai, Chandravarma Jain, Tejasvi Naik and others were present.

Irrespective of politics, I support Yettinahole project.
Let our brothers and sisters also have water for drinking and agriculture so that we will have rice and cereals. We cannot chew Areca-nut to quench our thirst and hunger.

Rain water is simply draining to the Sea. It is like KEREYA NEERANNU KEREGE CHELLI/POUR WELL WATER INTO THE WELL.

A sensible comment from Mr. Dinesh Poojari, Kundapura/Bengaluru.

100% agree with your views. Our Coastal area people will not wake up till the fire catches to their own house. Because of this lack of unity in our coastal people we are not able to stop these type of projects, including a Nandikoor power project which harm the environment.

Looking at the happenings even Niddodi project will happen as none of our leaders are willing to oppose the project.

Dinesh, I do agree on your comments. Even we coastal people should learn from neighbors Kerala. How they are grabbing the facilities granted to Mangalore.
Good eg for this how we lost more reservation in YPR-MNG train after extending to kannur.

Pros and cons of Yettinahole project no one knows. Justifications for implementation of the project by cabinet never publicized. Congress lacks professionalism. No party spokesperson to clarify doubts. The majority of MLA's doesn't speak. Those who speak suffer from foot in the mouth disease. Issue controversial statements. Opposition parties hold 400 demonstrations across Karnataka. Then Clarify that they didn't mean that. In between image of the party takes a severe beating. Congress legislators should understand that they have not won because of their merit but because of the cultured Karnataka Electorate. They owe their victory to the goodness of Karnataka people who did not approve high handedness, corruption, nepotism of the earlier ruling party. As a first step let them devise ways of interacting with people

After the Great Betrayal by Moily, and DVS, and 'Helpless' comment by Khader. I dont think the dharna's or protest's or Road block's will do any good. These turncoat Politician's are Hell bent on proceeding with the project. And i dont think they are doing this keeping the Elections in mind. They have only one thing in mind - 'Money'. Just look at the amount of money allotted for the project. I am damn sure that even before the project starts, half of the Money allotted will be in their pockets. And as of the project, it will never be completed for next 20 years at least. Because i have a Huge trust on their 'inability' to deliver any projects. So i am not much concerned, unless there is someone like 'Vishweshwariah' involved in this project, this project will never be completed.

Atal Bihari Vajapayee is the only person who has foresight about the water requirement. He wanted to join the rivers in Inida to ensure "no flood" & "no draught" in India.

He joined India by making "Suvarna Chatushpatha" roads. He also wanted to join the rivers, but could not remain in power. Now the situation is he can not be even in power.... :-(

Any project that plays havoc with our natural resources should be opposed tooth and nail. As far as my knowledge goes, hundreds of trees will have to be cut to facilitate this project and this is bound to have a rious consequence on the ecology. Ministers under whom this project has taken shape, whether they are from the BJP or the Congress, are absolutely not bothered about the environment and are only interested in filling their pockets. I wonder how much margin has been reserved for Mr. Sadananda Gowda and Mr. Veerappa Moily. Their faces should be blackened and they should be thrown out of the district. It is our misfortune that they were born and bred here.

    Dear Friends,
I hope since i have not reviewed the feasibility report, i cannot comment much. However to my understanding this project is to support irrigation towards eastern Karnataka. This project may also support to minimize water shortages in DK districts. In this context and in light of a clear objective it will be wise enough to consider this project on a techno-economic basis, to alleviate water problems. I also hope it is not good to go against this project based on half baked information and not to politicize it. Alternatively is there any other option considered by the Feasibility study providers to look for water resources to irrigate DK districts and Eastern Karnataka. Let us look at the merits and demerits of the proposed project before shelving down.

What a shame people opposing a drinking water project. What’s wrong in making this water for drinking purpose which otherwise simply ends up in the sea ..I had a great respect to Mr Vijay Kumar Shetty, didn’t expect him to politicize this issue for the sake of his political guru..

These poli-ticians stoop to any level to fulfil their desires.By inciting innocent students what these stooges going to achieve. These poli-ticians have no job now, after MCC election no proper work,MCC is non functional,no ability to install a official Mayor.Instead everybody is behaving like a Mayor.Ask a auto driver they will laugh at Congress MCC and poo-Poojary.
Good thing these poli-ticians can do is seek resignations from all four MLAs/minister elected from DK and show their anger against Yettinahole project.
    Student nepadalli makkalannu yettikattabedi.
I hope that ABVP will oppose these stooges vehemently and foil their dubious designs.

They had held a protest in FREEDOM PARK, Bangalore on 3rd week of January. Hardly 40-50 people were present.

If any Modi rally or Gandhi rally happens in Bangalore, half of Mangalore will be in Bangalore. This shows no one cares for Nela, Jala, Bhashe in Coastal districts. People are more politically oriented.

In that case I strongly admire people of Mandya, Mysore, Bangalore, Kolar, Tumkur. People say people of Mandya are blunt. Yes, what is wrong in that? Whenever Kaveri dispute arises, first they block railway lines, then roads and then march into Govt offices, public establishments and then call for strike. Every person supports bandh. Because they know only then their voice will be heard. Kaveri is their lifeline, they are ready to do anything for that. They forget political differences in such cases.

In coastal district, people do call for strikes when a bus conductor is attacked, tempo driver is assaulted. Congress minister says Yetinahole Project is initiated by BJP, BJP says the project is the gift of congress. Thank god, there is no JDS here. When will these politicians fight together for the betterment of the region?

And common people here never bothered about it. Because they are HONEST, CULTURED, DISCIPLINED, PEACE LOVING :-) People here think blocking the trains, roads will disturb the routine life of others. They are OK if tomorrow their livelihood is affected and they want to be good to others today.

Even BJP, which was harping Union and State Government regarding Ban on Areca are discreetly keeping a low profile. Shun your differences all political minded people and fight for your survival, the days are not far, we have to start desalination plants in our District to quench our thirst.

Simplen doubt, why our District MLA's create ruckus in Vidhana Sabha, opposing this Project. See the unity amongst Seemandra MP's in Parliament, even Three Union Ministers joined their brethren MP's. That is the spirit. We expect the same thing from our District MLA's.
