Mangalore, Feb 17: In a freak incident which occurred at Mallamar Beach near NITK Suratkal on Sunday February 16, two persons died due to drowning in Arabian Sea.

They have been identified as Sriram (22) and Ashwin (24), hailing from Gokulnagar in Kulai here.

The two friends reportedly wanted to spend their weekly off by bathing at sea. Around noon, they reached the beach. Both of them were sitting among huge boulders on the shore and chatting among themselves, when a huge wave which hit the shore at around 3 pm pulled Sriram away into the sea. Ashwin is said to have instantly tried to save his friend, but he failed in his effort, and drowned.

A friend of the duo, named Muttulingam, who said he had reached the spot about 30 minutes earlier to the tragedy, said that his friends had called him over the phone to join them in the fun. Bodies of the youth were recovered sometime after the incident.  S

riram, a diploma holder, was working in the marketing division of a private concern. He was the elder of the two children of his father, Satyanarayana Rao, and has left behind his parents and a sister.

Wait, they go to the beach, sit on the boulders which they know the waves do keep striking and can be dangerous, but still sit. Waves hit, they drown, and government pays for it, meaning we pay for it?
It's as good as saying I sat on the top of the mountain where the volcano erupts, and when it does and I die, the whole government compensates me for the suicide attempt I did, in a different style. Crazy.
I feel empathy for the souls lost, but we got to take our own precautions, not sit in the blazing fire and say governments mistake.
