The initiative and intent of the Bishop of Mangalore are commendable. Any measure undertaken for the welfare of the deprived sections of our society is certainly welcome if undertaken in a transparent manner. From another perspective - is it possible for the State Government to cater to the welfare of a section of the population only within a certain district ? A representation of all the Bishops within the State / Metropolitan See/ ecclesiastical Province with a common memorandum to address such issues regarding welfare of minorities (educational needs of poor families) would be a step in the right direction. This would also provide the State Government officials a better understanding of the needs of Catholic Church / Christian Community. Schemes initiated by the State Government need to taken advantage of by the members of the community. Local issues could be handled at the District level.
As regards building a monument in memory of Blessed John Paul II, that should be a matter of pride for the entire Catholic / Christian Community of Mangalore (and Udupi) dioceses. Don't we have the courage to muster enough resources to build a fitting memorial for our great Pope ? A collection is already being undertaken in one of the local parishes to build such a monument. A sizeable amount has already been collected. If the Catholic faithful of other parishes/diocese (and even those settled migrated overseas) contribute their mite we shall have a fitting memorial for our great Holy Father. He was our Pope !!!
A secular State cannot and should not interfere in building religious monuments to please any community. This gives rise to vote-bank politics. Tomorrow the State on the disguise of some law or land regulation will acquire the said property that belongs to the Church. There will be all kinds of questions raised. This creates un-necessary disharmony among our community. Hope better sense will prevail.

I am glad that Our Bishop Aloysius Paul has taken up the case of poor children with The Chief Minister Mr.Sidaramiaih and sought his help to educate them.

It is indeed a very valid appeal to The Chief Minister Mr. Sidaramaiah which Our Bishop Aloysius Paul has made for help to raise a suitable monument to commemorate the memory of Late Pope John Paul II who made historic visit to Mangalore over twenty years ago. It looks as if the other day that this saint visited our City Airport.

Our late Bishop Basil D'Souza made all possible arrangements to ensure a suitable welcome to The Pope. Various committees were formed for different jobs. Monsignor Alexander D'Souza was assigned the portfolio to oversee the arrangements. Among the lay people three important jobs were assigned to:

Late Blassius D,Souza to look after housing

Late Mr. Paul Rodricks to look after transport and parking.

Mr. Joe Gonsalves to arrange security arrangements at the Airport and at The Podium.

When the memorable day dawned for the arrival of the Pope I had the pleasure of accompanying the dignitaries to The Airport in a specail bus owned and driven by Maxy Lobo. I still recall the moment when I was introduced to The Pope by Our Bishop Basil at the turmac. I had the pleasure to shake hands and speak with this saint when I uttered the carefully rehearsed words 'VIVA IL PAPA' and indeed The Pope returned my greetings .

It is my sincere hope that The Government will favorably consider our Bishop's request and readily take up the project on the cite where Pope John Paul II addressed over four lacs of people.

Great work done by our Rev Bishop !I surprise we meet Siddu very often, but never think of Niddodian's and surrounding people, whether the plan of Ultra Mega Power project is really coming to Niddodi ?.What a pity..!All great leaders are giving comments no one has assured and dared to ask directly to the chief minister. What is the suspense in it,Who can answer our question.I think only before the Lok Sabha election.Or After election.God Bless Niddodia's fight till the end.

The Church helps the needy in many ways. The poorest of the poor are not alone and the Church has done so much for them in Mangalore and other parts of India.
It is so important to treat the poorest of the poor with dignity and respect, seeings their needs, look after them. We find that in the Gospel.

    Best regards
