Mangalore: Rare 2 in 1 procedure saves policeman at Father Muller Hospital

Media Release

Mangalore, Feb 20: For the first time in Karnataka, a combined "hybrid (2 in 1)" procedure was carried out at Father Muller Hospital by a team of doctors headed by Dr H Prabhakar and Dr A G Jayakrishnan, saving the life of a 47-year-old policeman.

The patient was admitted to cardiology department of Father Muller hospital with severe breathing difficulty and swelling of both legs. He had a history of enlargement of veins (varicose veins) in the legs and had undergone many surgeries in outside hospital in Mangalore.

Dr H Prabhakar, chief interventional cardilogist and Dr Sayyid has conducted several tests, made a diagnosis of acute chronic pulmonary thromboembolism. Both his lungs were filled with clots causing obstruction to blood flow into the lungs and causing failure of the right side of the heart. Leg veins and heart chamber were filled with clots.

Emergency surgery was conducted by a team of cardiac surgeons headed by Dr A G Jayakrishnan and Dr K T Anand in which after connecting the patient to a heart lung machine all the clots were removed from both lungs as well as from the right heart chamber .The entire procedure took over 5 hours.

At the same time a filter was inserted by Dr H Prabhakar through a leg vein into the main vein to prevent spread of further clots to the lung from the leg in operation theater.

This is the first time that such a hybrid procedure is being carried out in the state.

The patient has recovered well and will be able to resume work soon.

Fr Patrick Rodrigues, director, FMCI, said that Father Muller Hospital is equipped with the latest instruments to handle complicated heart diseases. Fr Richard Coelho, administrator, FMMCH, congratulated the team of doctors who saved the serving policeman from critical illness.

Congrats to Dr JK. He has been my classmate, roommate, housemate and best friend for over 47 years. I have seen him blossom into a fantastic doctor. He is an extremely smart chap, but very unassuming and quiet and always thinks and uses common sense in everything that he does. He stayed in my house in Ireland while doing his UK and Irish surgical higher exams. He is one of a very few doctors who passed all his Fellowship exams at the very first attempt , a feat which is very rare in the UK.
A very good friend to all who have been lucky enough to have known him and a fantastic surgeon with humility .
His family will be proud of him and so are all his friends and classmates from the KMC Manipal/Mangalore..his patients will never realize how good a doctor they have in him .
Keep at it, JK , dear buddy and may God bless you

It is indeed good to see the feat and the great job done at the Father Muller's Hospital by a team of doctor which has resulted in saving the life a policeman. I would indeed say kudos to Dr. A.G. Jayakrishnan and Dr. K.T. Anand on the rare surgery performed by them.Of course Doctor Prabhakar and Dr. Sayed do not need introduction. They have been with FMCI for some time now setting records as good efficinet and reliable cardiologists who can be depended upon for any procedures. I have no hesitation in saying that they are a part of Father Muller's and have not only built great names for themselves but also enhanced the name of Father Muller's Institutions. I had the privilege of being treated by them when they found the need for the placement of a PACEMAKER on me.

Father Patrick has rightly stated that Father Muller's has the davancement technology and equipment. This combined with skills of the doctors makes this institution amongst the best in the Country.

I have a long and happy association with Father Muller's and I am indeed proud of this GREAT NAME - FATHER MULLER'S.

I do not think that Father Augustus Muller ever imagined that this institution which started over one hundred and thirty years ago as a tiny homeopathy dispensary would make such great strides towards growth and progress.

I join several others in saying congrats to The Management and the doctors/surgeons attached to FMCI.
