Mangalore: Held up by erratic traffic, heart patient loses life

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Feb 22: Ramesh Sanil (45) from Eliyarpadavu near Ullal would have survived, but for a traffic snarl at Adam Kudru, his family members rue.

Because of the traffic chaos, the vehicle carrying him got stuck in between his home and the city. Although efforts were made to take him to a hospital in Thokkottu because of the delay involved, it was too late.

Sanil, a tailor by profession, had suffered heart attack, and was being taken to a hospital in Mangalore for treatment when the vehicle got caught in jam-packed traffic.

On Friday February 21, a truck developed problems and got stranded on Netravati Bridge. When two-wheelers and light vehicles tried to move ahead by sneaking through the  din, a Maruti Omni vehicle and a motor bike got involved in an accident. As a result, traffic got stranded for six long hours. This problem put paid to the hopes of Sanil’s survival. Several other ambulances were also stuck in this traffic.

In the past, whenever traffic on Netravati Bridge developed problems, the vehicles used to move on the new bridge. However, movement of vehicles on the new bridge stands barred since the last some days on account of ongoing works. As a result, traffic snarl continued to bother the people using this road on Friday till late evening.

High time Traffic police wake up and teach some lane sense to drivers.. Launch a campaign on how to follow lane system on the roads, especially when there is a block.. and now the only people that are at loss are the family of deceased as one else will take responsibility.. No point in blaming any one its .. just that the that people are so eager to get a license they are ready to pay any amount of bribe to get a license without learning any safety or rules... shame on the drivers and the RTO officials who give license to people just for a few 10 rupee notes and take life at no cost. So if at you have blame- blame the citizen who are careless and the parents of the kids who do not teach them morals...

In many countries, it is a rule ,when Ambulance,Fire Trucks,Police are moving with their lights on ,every vehicle should move over to the side or give way otherwise a heavy penalty is imposed. Our fellow citizens do not think they could the one in need today or tomorrow ,"Let us all voluntarily pledge to move over and stop the next time we see a emergency vehicle and also encourage our ignorant or careless fellow citizens to do so ..".

RIP bro!!!Mangluru has already started facing the big infrastructure crunch on all fronts i.e. roads, water, electricity, etc. and this is only going to increase by the day as more and more vehicles come on the roads and the population burgeons!!

The planners should learn a lesson or two from the Metro Cities where the infra problem has gone out of hand and on how they are trying to put things on track like discouraging buying of more than one vehicle per family by doubling taxes on the second vehicle, asking for confirming parking space before allotting vehicles, hefty increase in parking charges, pooling vehicles, congestion tax etc. which appears the only way out as there to be no real scope for expansion of roads in the future!!

At present what we see a one sided expansion of the concrete jungle with huge housing projects coming up without a commensurate increase in infrastructure, and the effects of it will be seen in another 5 years, hope the authorities get into the act before the citizens get throttled!!

Imagine 10 years hence how the condition would be, just choc a bloc and tragic incidents like one reported will become the order of the day!!! Jai Hind!!

No big deal, we are people who always against infrastructure development, so we have to face such situation. When it comes to the road widening matter and all we are the best protesters..... All this drama to blame others..... For. eg. In the heart of the city if the administration wants to widen the road, let see how many of owners ready to vacate the place.......

You are right, no single person is ready to give an inch of space, even if they are offered to fit compensation, but the same people cry and crib when suffering and in another 10 years Mangluru will be worst than a Metro city with all infrastructurual related problems, including water, electricity, public parking, sewerage, garbage, etc., absolutely no planning like some other tier II and III cities!!

Some People even blaming Italy for our local problems - the height of ignorance. The succesive Local and Central Govts fail to provide infrastructure required. They Build Schools but no teachers, Playing ground, Toilets etc. They Build Hospitals but no appointment of Doctors and other staff, lab etc. They build bridges without proper planing. They give Bicycles, but no access to roads. They give laptop, but no electricity. Instead of deciding on party lines we must think on personalities while we are voting.

Dear Rahul,Every land his own privileges.Everyone cannot be in the Gulf. Here we have our own freedom,in gulf cannot do as you want,if you do you will loose head or Hand .Otherwise everyone would try a Chance.here Problem is everywhere. For Major operations, some People come to India because of specialists and cheaper is.let us not compare with gulf for everything. Our traffic Problem can be solved only from proper traffic officials.sad that poor People have to suffer and sometimeses leave their life. May his Soul rest in peace.

@Rita you are very wrong. In gulf you wil lose a hand or a leg if h has committed a crime. If u follow the rules and regulations nothing happens. Your perception or knowledge is wrong . And yes the rules in the gulf are good and people follow it .or else they would be severely dealt with not like in india . No rules, no regulations nothing.in the gulf u have a separate lane totally for emergency services which only police n ambulances can use. In india the drivers make their own lane. Apna rasta khud banao.its a bitter truth, that's why people don't want to compare.our country needs a massive clean up.
