Ram Vilas Paswan's LJP to tie up with BJP for 2014 election

New Delhi, Feb 24 (PTI): A senior leader from Ram Vilas Paswan's Lok Janshakti Party on Sunday said that his party has decided to go with the Bharatiya Janata Party in the next Lok Sabha polls.

After a meeting of LJP leaders at Paswan's residence in New Delhi, former MP and party leader Surajbhan Singh told reporters, “The alliance between LJP and BJP has been finalised."

However, LJP secretary general Abdul Khalik told PTI that no final decision has been taken, and only parliamentary board of LJP can decide it.

When asked how can the LJP chief, who was the first to quit NDA in 2002 protesting against Gujarat riots, could align with BJP whose prime ministerial candidate is Narendra Modi, Surajbhan Singh said, "When the court has given a clean chit to Modi, who are we to say anything?"

He said that a formal announcement about the alliance will be made "very soon" in which it would be made clear which party will contest how many seats in Bihar.

He also said that Paswan will soon meet BJP chief Rajnath Singh over the issue.

However, other senior party leaders chose to remain ambivalent on the issue, saying no such decision has been taken as yet and the party is still to decide on the alliance issue.

"With regard to the alliance issue, no final decision has been taken only the parliamentary board of LJP can decide it. The board will meet in a couple of days," Khalik told PTI.

He, however, parried a question as to whether the LJP has had any talks for alliance with BJP.

"Our talks with Congress and RJD are going on," was his brief refrain to the question.

Another party leader, speaking on condition of anonymity, acknowledged that with the delay in finalising an alliance between Congress, RJD and LJP, there is pressure from the party workers to chalk out a different path and take a decision which suits the party.

Sources said that some BJP leaders from Bihar had recently met Paswan.

There are 40 Lok Sabha seats in Bihar. Earlier, Paswan had given indication of aligning with JD-U by praising Nitish Kumar.

Paswan's party had been an alliance partner of NDA government but the LJP chief was the first to quit the BJP-led alliance in 2002 post-Godhra riots when Modi was the Chief Minister of Gujarat.

After LJP quitting NDA, six other parties had also quit the alliance in quick succession and NDA had virtually disintegrated paving the way for Congress-led UPA to come to power in 2004.

No doubt that Paswan is opportunistic & is seeing which way the wind is blowing. He may be going for this tie up in order not to be irrelevant in Bihar- LJP has no LS seats, but is sitting on a plum 10-13% vote share amongst all parties in Bihar. This tie up will also give a fillip to Modi & BJP as they can concentrate more than 40% vote share in the 40 LS seats & garner maximum for themselves...

Christians are a minority among the minorities so they won't have an impact at the national level except for places like the State of Goa, twin districts of DK and Udupi, the North-east and maybe some parts of Kerala.

You need to be more concerned with the Hindu vote itself with all the different casts that are there. It is common knowledge that many people in India vote for candidates of their own caste, that's why Yeddy was a CM candidate during a BJP's era in Karnataka, mainly to attract the large Lingayat vote bank.

Declan, caste plays major role in Indian politics..but so far caste politics didnt worked in DK..Dhananjay being minority (Jain) won the 4 elections..Nalin kumar being bunt not enjoys much Bunt vote..Bunts have traditionally supported Congress..Janardhana poojary being Billava dont enjoy much support from community..BJP has major vote share of Billavas..

There will always be exceptions to the rule here and there, but one cannot deny its impact, especially in rural areas as opposed to urban areas. Having said that, I must add that the 'Caste effect' has greater impact in North India, again, especially in the rural areas.

Paswan is eyeing on Finance Minstry/Railway ministry in NDA Govt, if NDA comes to power. Also, this opportunist has no other option to improve his disrupted political career.

After all MAHA FEKU is "last hope" for all hopeless Fekus.

BJP need not feel too excited about the opportunist LJP is joining them. Jeetendra, SV Pai and Anand are right. Paswan has worked as a minister under 4 or 5 different Prime Ministers. Last LS elections he lost the seat he was contesting from. Lastly, the LJP did not have a single seat in the just concluded 15th.Lok Sabha.

Seems like Paswan is trying to save his party from becoming politically totally irrelevant.

This seems to be a party whose only ideology is to align with those in power or those expected to come to power.

Ram Vilas Paswan has got a good base among SC/ST voters of Bihar. So,no one can take his party lightly. His party candidates may not win, but they have got the capacity to damage the chances of other candidates.

When BJP is gaining half of Bihar seats in its own, what was the need to join LJP of 0 seat.
BJP may win 2-3 seats extra out of this but it will scare away thousands of loyal supporters.
