987 buses to be purchased at a cost of Rs 429 crore

Bangalore, Feb 24: As many as 987 buses will be purchased by the two State public transport undertakings under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission at a cost of Rs 429 crore.
 
A decision to this effect is understood to have been taken by the State Cabinet at its meeting, which was held under the chairmanship of chief minister Siddaramaiah on Monday.

The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporations would be purchasing 487 buses at a cost of Rs 184.12 crore from Tatas Motors, while Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation would buy 500 buses at a cost of Rs 245 crore from Ashok Leyland, informed sources said.

The State Cabinet meeting is learnt to have decided to keep in abeyance the Karnataka Professional Educational Institutions (Regulation of Admission and Fixation of Fee) Act, 2006 for admission of students for medical, engineering and dental courses in 2014-15.

The State Government and private managements have decided to continue with last year’s fee structure and seat sharing ratio for admission of students for professional courses for next academic year (2014-15).

Private college managements held a meeting last week with the Chief Minister to resolve issues with regard to admission to professional courses.

The State Cabinet has given administrative approval for the Nandavadi Lift Irrigation project and it would be constructed at a cost of Rs 1,530 crore.

The State Cabinet also decided to reduce the target fixed for levy rice from 2.5 lakh tonnes to 1.5 lakh tonnes.
A few days ago, rice mill owners had gone on a strike following the government fixing the levy target at 2.5 lakh tonnes.

The State Cabinet gave approval for tenders for construction of buildings for Gulbarga, Madekeri, Koppal, Karwar government colleges.

It also approved Rs 65 crore dinking water project to 107 villages of Tumkur district.

The State Cabinet has also approved construction of a police station building at Chickballapur, sanctioned a new pharmacy college in Gulbarga, and taking up development works at Talacauvery and Bhagamangala in Kodagu district at a cost of Rs 16.24 crore, official sources said.
