Bangalore, Feb 27: Advocate and writer B A Mohammed Haneef has been appointed as the president of Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy. Hailing from Kuppepadavu Kallady, he is presently a resident of Ullal.

Mohammed Haneef has been actively involved in the Beary movement since 1998. He has served as the president of Akhila Bharata Beary Parishat, founder president of Muslim Vikasa Parishat and also as the Central Beary Academy president. He has organized a number of programmes in various capacities and published various works on Beary language and literature.

Also, Prof Janaki Brahmavar of Udupi has been appointed as the president of state Tulu Sahitya Academy. She has worked for Tulu literature in different spheres has been actively working for the promotion of the languages ever since Tulu Academy was established. She has several works to her credit and has also translated novels in other languages to Tulu.

She was born in Moodukundru of Udupi district in 1950. She completed her education at Brahmavar and worked as a lecturer. She has written Tulu novels such as 'Kudurada Kedage', 'Kappugidi', 'Yuga Magarnaga', 'Rukku' and others. She has also published works like 'Court Marshal', 'Ekalavya', 'Rakshakshi' 'Mayada Murga', 'Amer Baider' in Tulu.  She has been conferred the Paniyadi Tulu Kadambari Award, Karnataka Tulu Academy Book Award and Sandesha Award in recognition of her contribution to Tulu literature.

Last year, the government had either accepted resignations or given marching orders to the presidents of various academies or chairpersons of authorities in the state, and then failed to post suitable candidates in these vacancies for about nine months. It has appointed people to 13 top posts and memberships of different academies and authorities.

As per the order, the term of the new presidents and members will be three years or till further orders in this respect that may be issued by the government henceforth, whichever is earlier.

The presidents and chairpersons of academies and various authorities had either voluntarily tendered resignations or were asked to vacate their posts, after the new Congress-led government rose to power in Karnataka last year. The exercise of appointing people to these posts had been initiated in all earnestness.

Although names were finalized for all the academies barring Tulu, Konkani, Beary and Kodava academies by December last, the government wanted to wait to extract opinions of local MPs before finalizing names for these four academies. The process got delayed as mainly there were marked differences over the issue between different MPs from the state’s coast.

The list was finalized over a week ago, and sent to the chief minister (CM) for his approval.  However, it is learnt that all those who have been appointed as presidents and members of academies this time are fresh, not having worked in these posts in the past. The government wants to give opportunities to fresh faces to enable them to show their mettle, it is learnt. With the CM affixing his signature to the list on Wednesday, these academies are expected to resume meaningful activities without delay and utilize unutilized budgetary allocations soon.

The new appointments are as follows: 1. Kuvempu Bhasha Bharati Authority (Dr K V Narayan). 2. Karnataka Sahitya Academy (Prof Malati Pattanashetty). 3. Kannada Books Authority (Dr Banjagere Jayaprakash). 4. Karnataka Janapada Academy (Pichalli Srinivas). 5. Karnataka Shilpakala Academy (Mahadevappa Shambhulingappa Shilpi). 6. Hearty Congratulations to B.A.Mohamed Hanif, on being appointed as the president of the Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy. I take this opportunity to express my compliments to Umer U.H.and other appointed members of the academy.- Hameed Padubidre, Idinabba Chikmaglur, Muhammad Firdouse Madikeri, Hussain Katipalla, Abbas Kiragunda Moodigere, Abdul Hameed Bantwal, Zohara Krishnapura, Hameed Kalladka Ullala and Badruddeen Mani.
I wish the president and members the best in all their future endeavors. Let the community a benefit from their achievements, and use their boundless energy to serve the Society we live in.
My humble suggestion to them is not only to confine their service to Beary cultural activities, but to look into the weak and downtrodden in the community, whenever and wherever it needed. I know that Academy given field is restricted to only Beary cultural activities, but still try to address the social problems of the community which ever possible way.
