Mangalore, Mar 7: As many as 76 students of Kinya Belaringe higher primary school under Ullal police station limits on Friday March 7 took ill after they consumed mid-day meals served in the school. They were rushed to a private hospital at Deralakatte

The children identified as Safan, Anisha, Tanshira, Fasila, Ashura, Afiza, Rehmat and Nihana were admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital for severe vomiting and were discharged later in the evening after their recovery.  A child named Safreena is still in the hospital.

The children had complained of foul smell in the food to helpers in the kitchen.  The children however were asked to eat it.  After consuming the food, some children complained of giddiness followed by stomach pain and vomiting.  Some of the children were then taken to the hospital, said Safreena.

"Children with severe vomiting have been given medicine.  Some have complained of stomach pain and all have been given tablets.  An ambulance has been arranged by the department for those who experience stomach pain in the night. Samples of rice and sambar cooked as meal have been sent to the laboratory", said Dr Ratnakar, taluk medical officer and district executive.

The rice was taken from a new sack, said headmistress Rekha.

Ullal police visited the hospital.

Just providing midday meal is not at all sufficient, you need to maintain the cleanliness and the standard. Health officers should visit the places where the food is being prepared and necessary action should take if any one does not follow the guidelines laid by the health ministry.Earlier one or two instances we have seen in your news officers are making surprise visit on public kitchens, Now it is totally forgotten. These small children are innocent & helpless Govt spending crores of rupees on schemes like this. But corrupted administration eats up everything. I am sure U.T Kader knows this and comes out with the pioneer idea to solve this problem permanently.

Very sad. Why the food is tested first and then given to the children. Responsible officials must look into the matter and do not give stale food to the innocent and poor children. hey are the future of our county.

The mid-day meal program has continued for years, worsening day- by-day, it is still not made clear that who is accountable for these tragedies, No proper monitoring system is yet in place! There is definitely a huge lack of administration. NO ONE IS REALLY BOTHERED. And the blame-game goes on as usual. But is the government only to be blamed? We too are responsible in many roles as – parents, teachers, village committee members, ward-members, officials, social observers, social activists, etc. We have been sleeping on the mega loopholes for years, even though we know it is meant to feed these innocent little children...

Brayan, we have to blame Govt only..In INDIA,social programs initiated not for the betterment of people, its just a populist vote bank politics..If Govt is sincere, first it should build basic amenities like running water, toilets etc in school then midday meal..eventhough, court ruled that teachers are not liable for midday meal program, in several schools they are forced due to lack of cooks..it will be wise if Govt distributes rice/daal in the month end to students & students bring tiffin from home..Teachers burden & parents tensions will be relieved..

Very bad, and careless by the school authorities . It is the bad practice of giving midday meal , better instead of that give some fixed amount to children account let them arrange their own food.. It prevents all these Mal practices..wish the children speedy recovery.

This indicates there is NO RULE of LAW in Mangalore. Remember, most of the food stuff get spoiled due to lack of power that leads to refrigeration problem and get poison to consume.

What a pity. Even after the children complained about bad smell they forced them to eat.I think the food prepared in mass scale for school children should be tasted by the cook and headmistress or any other responsible teacher.I wish recovery to all sick children.

How cruel are these people who are so careless while preparing food for children, who are also having children, who are using it as a political tool!!! Mid Day Meal should rename as "The Final Meal" and then relaunched with the tag "Eat at your own risk"
There must be a strict action against the cook and school management.
