Mumbai, Jun 6: Filmmaker Hrishikesh Mukherjee is critically ill and is currently being treated at the Lilavati Hospital here.

He is suffering from chronic renal failure, lungs infection and coronary artery failure.

Mukherjee is best known for bittersweet family films and comedies that made millions laugh and cry for generations.

His masterpieces include Abhimaan, Chupke Chupke, Mili, Golmal, Namak Haram and Anand.

In 1999, he attempted a comeback with Jhoot Bole Kauwwa Kaate but it was a commercial failure.

The veteran filmmaker began his career in Bombay in 1951, as an editor and assistant director to Bimal Roy.

Mukherjee's first directorial venture was Musafir.
