Karkala: Medical negligence – case filed against doctor of Gajria Hospital

Karkala, Mar 27: Relating to the unfortunate death of a woman in Gajria Hospital here, the relatives of the deceased have filed a case of medical negligence against the hospital authorities.  The deceased is Nikshita (31), wife of Umesh Salian from Bajagoli Mudaru near here.

Nikshita, who was suffering from complications relating to piles, had been admitted as an inpatient at Gajria Hospital on Tellar Road in the town at around 11 am on March 17. Attending doctor, Dr Sachchidananda Prabhu, reportedly prescribed transfusion of blood to her, after finding her to be anaemic.

It is learnt that on March 20, three bottles of blood was administered to the patient. The lady’s relatives said that the condition of Nikshitha had deteriorated by the time blood was administered again the next day.

As the condition of the patient turned critical on March 22, at the advice of the doctor, she was taken to K S Hegde Medical College and Hospital at Derlakatte, Mangalore in the ambulance of Karkala hospital ambulance. By 3 pm on March 23, Nikshitha breathed her last.

Reportedly, failure of the doctors of the hospital in Karkala to refer her to better hospitals in Mangalore in time after her condition turned serious, and negligence of the hospital authorities in failing to check about the availability of oxygen in the ambulance, were reasons for the patient’s death.

Umesh Salian claimed that the body of his wife had been swollen all over, blood was oozing out of the skin everywhere, and it emanated bad stench. As such, the family had no other go but to conduct the funeral without waiting further, he said.

A complaint under section 304 (a) of Indian Penal Code stands registered against the accused in the town police station.
