Karwar, Apr 3: The leaders of many organizations submitted a memorandum to the DC M T Reju in the city stating that the Rabindranath Tagore beach should not be given to the coast guard at any cost and have also threatened to boycott elections if their request is not paid heed to.

The memorandum stated that the city had already lost nine beaches to the sea bird naval based project and now this was the only beach left for the public and hence under no circumstances should the beach be given to the coast guard.

In the year 2010, the coast guard had acquired 14 acres of land from the beach and was approved for setting up a coast guard station, but it faced severe opposition when there was a plan to fence the area.

Adhering to the demand of the people, B N Krishnayya wrote a letter to the government asking it not to grant land to the coast guard and the government accepted it. But now the coast guard is yet again trying to acquire the land and the people are not in favour of it.

The people have said that in case the land is given to the coast guard they will not cast their vote for the forthcoming elections.

After receiving the memorandum, DC Reju asked for time to go through the matter and said that he will study the matter and take a decision after the elections.

Lawyer KR Desai, city Municipal Council member Ganpati Ulveker, leader of the fishermen community Ganpati Mahadev Nayak and others were also present.
