Mangalore: ‘Cameras to keep vigil at sensitive areas’ – SP

Mangalore, Apr 14: Dakshina Kannada district superintendent of police (SP), Sharanappa, said that closed circuit television cameras (CCTV) had been fitted at various places in the district to keep vigil on activities in areas considered as sensitive. He was speaking to media persons during the voters’ awareness programme organized at Panambur Beach here on Sunday April 13.

‘CCTVs will also help us in monitoring the activities in Kalladka in view of repeated instances of disturbances there. These cameras are being controlled by local police stations,’ he added.

‘Before the beginning of polling, CCTVs will be set up in sensitive areas, border areas, etc. Four cameras will be in place at each such spots. The police department also has plans to set up such cameras in 12 locations additionally. Cameras will monitor places like Puttur bus stand, Ishwaramangala, Nekkilady, Navoor etc. 20 cameras have already been functioning in four places of Kalladka. 36 more cameras will be installed before the polling begins at 12 more places,’ he explained.

Sharanappa said that these cameras have the capacity to save recorded data for 20 days, and that they are equipped with technology to identify those who try to either steal or damage them, adding that the district administration had spent five lac rupees for this purpose.

He said that contingents of Border Security Force, paramilitary forces, armed police contingents of Karnataka and Kerala, local policemen, as well as three contingents of Karnataka State Reserve Police, have been deployed in the light of Kalladka incidents. ‘We have arrested five persons in relation to Kalladka disturbances, and are trying to make more arrests. Section 144 clamped in the area has been lifted since Sunday evening,’ he added.
