Mangalore, May 11: Health minister U T Khadar on Saturday May 10 said that officials must take immediate steps to check the spread of diseases like malaria and dengue in the city.

He was presiding a review meeting of malaria control programme and a health campaign under the Mangalore city limits at the Mangalore City Corporation here on Saturday May 10.

Drawing comparisons between the city's malaria eradication report of this year and last year, U T Khadar said chances of outbreak of communicable diseases had increased this year due to increase in mosquitoes.

He said, "MCC has the power to close down shops in case they do not maintain their respected areas clean; the health department and MCC should join hands and work together to prevent malaria. There are around 330 buildings under construction; in each one of them there are almost 50-60 workers and nobody knows in what condition they are working and what is the condition of their health."

He added, "To eradicate malaria completely, we have to create awareness among the people by visiting their houses. There are many water tanks in Mangalore which should be cleaned immediately before the arrival of the monsoon. Mangalore should become a disease-free city."

In addition , J R Lobo, MLA of Mangalore south constituency suggested the health officials to find out the main reason for the diseases and said, "Sometimes diseases arise from the waste thrown in particular areas. Mangalore city is losing its beauty when compared to Kasargod. Kasargod is more beautiful than Mangalore.

"In Mangalore the worst places are the market areas. It is very difficult to walk inside the market. Jeppu market does not have a public toilet and I had requested the health officers many times but they did not respond and MCC too has failed to clean the markets," he said.

He also advised the health officials to look after the maintenance of public toilets and markets and ensuree that there is no water logging. "We have to give medicine to the causes, not to the diseases," he added.

With regard to the department of health, J R Lbo said that the department has collapsed and due to this the students who come from different areas are decreasing.

Mangalore north MLA Mohiuddin Bava said that the Suratkal locality does not have adequate drainage system and the place stinks the whole time.

"Everywhere roads are built in a nice way but the drainage facility is not provided," he added.

Mayor Mahabala Maarla said that if CREDAI and health officers visit construction areas, they will see loads of problems.

"A few hospitals have stopped giving malaria reports when the cases reach 25. Hospitals have to be efficient and keep forwarding the latest reports to the health sections," he said.

"Initially, MCC workers would go to houses and spray chemicals to keep the mosquitoes away but now there not enough staff to continue this work," said U T Khadar when asked about the spraying of chemicals in different areas.

Deputy mayor Kavitha, corporator Shashidhar Hegde, general health secretary Shiva Kumar and others were present during the meeting.

Lay people should start a campaign all over DK and especially in the cities where these mosq. are a menace. It should immediately otherwise it will be too late and the drains have to be repaired and the market areas have to to be kept clean by those concerned ( the people who are using the premises and the mcc together). One cannot blame the mcc all the while these people who are using the premises should also take care that the water is not thrown everywhere but at the places earmarked. Awareness has to be created among all sections people, mcc and those using the premises.

Our MLA's are good at one thing or one development they did after coming to power. Tax their own people who voted them to power. (ic: Property tax)

More than 50% of mangalore are outsiders or from other states, who come here to study or work or do business. They do not have to pay any tax for development of Mangalore but instead taxing the people who voted is wrong.

Pro active approach by the government is better than reactive approach. Some states provide better facilities for their own people but this not happening in Mangalore.

Good initiatives by the ministers concerned, but imagine if educated/well off people staying in posh flats can hurl garbage bags slyly at night into a neighboring deserted compound to save a few rupees what can be expected from an illiterate coolie workers and their ilk who do not even know the basics of hygiene??? Jai Hind!

nice concern of the state health minister. but overall work of the municipality with help of some local NGO s garbage disposal system can be improved. no doubt malaria deadly disease but mangalore city now infected by gang war more more young people attracted to this gang war death rate is increased due this menace. this should view seriously by the home minister and parent of young children who are been attracted to these gangs for money.
today Mangalore is seen model cosmopoly city in Karnataka. but these gang wars and police inaction will lead this to another mumbai.

Mr. Minister please send your health department people to visit falnir area where there are many Apartments coming up and the workers are not keeping the area clean. Drainage water and garbage and dumping of materials on roads is seen daily, which also causes the disease.

Its time to stop visiting houses and educating people about spread of malaria. Now its time for the minister and officials to act.
The main breeding centres of mosquitoes in all cities are the construction sites. The water here is logged for months ensuring a perfect ecosystem for mosquitoes to breed. It can be avoided if the logged water is changed in every 4 days, so the larvae do not form. But the official get regular goodies to not to act on this menace.
Proper garbage disposal also is another way to curb the spread of malaria. The MCC has utterly failed in this regard. The tender coconut shells can be seen everywhere is Mangalore which are again breeding heavens of mosquitoes.
Mr. Khader who has come out with really appreciable ideas like Vitamin tablets, iron supplements for students and sanitary napkins for girls has a vision. If he uses his power and the officials lend their support Mangalore would be Mlaria Free for sure.

Dumping garbage here and there & foul water flow are the main causes of all these diseases. And above all lack of cleanliness. Government should act fast instead of giving false promises & lecture.
