14 Jharkhand child labourers rescued from Bangalore

Bangalore, May 20 (DHNS): Focusing on the dark underbelly of big cities, NGO Child Rights & You (CRY) rescued 14 children, who were forced to work at street-side pani puri stalls in Bangalore and sent home to Jharkhand.

The initiative is part of a nationwide programme undertaken by the NGO to fight for child rights. While the children came from different parts of Jharkhand, the NGO rescued them from their employers across Bangalore and repatriated them back to Jharkhand’s child & social welfare department in Ranchi.

The children were trafficked to Bangalore with the lure of a better life, but were made to work at pani puri stands in different parts of the City. Pani puri, known as Golgappa across north India and phuchka in Kolkata, is a popular snack among Indians comprising a ball of dough, filled with spicy morsels and dipped in tangy-sweet tamarind syrup.

According to CRY officials, the children heaved a sigh of relief only after the Hatia-Yeshwantpur express chugged its way into the crowded Ranchi platform.

CRY officials pointed out that the initiative to rescue them was taken along with Talash, a Bangalore-based NGO, which identified these children in the third week of April and immediately alerted the local child welfare committee (CWC).

“The rescue of the children was carried out by the CWC in Bangalore and finally the children were handed over to a team of NGOs and the Jharkhand Police.

“CRY, which works in Karnataka along with Talash as one of its many partner organisations, played an instrumental role in coordinating the process of repatriation and rehabilitation of those children, with help of partner organisations in both Karnataka and Jharkhand,” said a senior CRY official.

Of the 14 boys, nine hail from Koderma district, two each from Giridih and Bokaro districts and one from Chatra district of Jharkhand.

According to CRY official Abhijit Mukherjee: “All the children come from impoverished families and their parents were conned by a local broker who runs a business in Bangalore.”

The boys were lured with promise of good education and a job but were engaged as workers at a pani puri factory in Bangalore, for two to four years, he said.

While all the children shared the same story, 12-year-old Guddu (name changed), said he used to work at a pani puri factory at Bhartinagar and used to work as a helper at a roadside pani puri stand.

“They said they would provide us with a good job but later I found that it was just a pani puri stall where I had to work for 12 to 14 hours a day,” the boy said.

" Focusing on the dark underbelly of big cities,"-Unquote:
    Where all can one focus?
Did you see a 'Bell' or 'Ghantaa' by the way while focusing? You would have let out a big 'CRY' if you had...Wouldn't you?.
Tell you one true fact. You can rescue 14 'child laborers' round the year in India every day. This is no big show. How one can hit 'at the root' of all this ,is where the energies must concentrate.providing education everywhere seems to be the only solution at present.

Child labour is a breach of human rights. ´The prevalence of child labour is a blot on society and a national disgrace that millions of children in India have to spend a major part of their daily routine in hazardous works.Children are deprived of education. They are overworked and under paid they are made to shine shoes on footpaths, work as rag pickers, house maids, selling newspapers on highways and so much more. Innocent children are employed in industries and by individuals who put them to work in gruelling circumstances. They are made to work for long hours in dangerous factory units and sometimes made to carry loads even heavier than their own body weight. Many a times, children are being beaten and physically tortured when they make a mistake. Such is the story of millions of children in India – painful, yet true. Though eradicating the menace seems like a difficult and nearly impossible task, immense efforts have to be made in this direction.  Child labour is often the upshot of poverty, unemployment and illiteracy, when in fact it is the perpetrator of these maladies. These very children then grow, become beggars and eventually are sold to exploitive employers to have additional sources of income. This malady is rampant across the length and breadth of India.´
Children are the weakest members of a society and therefore everything must be done to create an environment to enable them a peaceful, prosperous and stable future.

    Best regards

Righty said sir, Child labourer is a big menace in this country. This is a money minting trade. Parents, employers, activist, NGOs, Babus all make loads of bucks in this trade. On the one hand children and childhood are repressed. There are plethora's of laws, offices, authorities, NGOs etc., in the name of prevention of child labourers but for no result. Unless and until the money greedy parents of child labourers are not punished, this problem will not be solved.

superb. appreciate the drive. but I am interested in knowing what's the punishment given to the local broker mentioned about, who runs a business in Bangalore. he looks the main culprit. was he allowed to escape with out any punishment ? he will continue this unless he is severely punished. One side, yes the children are saved , but he need to be eliminated from society to stop such incidents in future.
