Govt has no plans to withdraw Priyanka's privileges at airport

New Delhi, Jun 8 (PTI): The government has no plans to withdraw exemption given to Priyanka Gandhi and her husband Robert Vadra from normal security checks at airports when they travel together.

"Security is given to any individual on the basis of threat perception and members of the Gandhi family continue to be under high degree of threat. Ensuring security to such people, agencies have to follow certain protocol which cannot be changed just like that," a senior official said. As of now Priyanka, being an Special Protection Group protectee, is exempted from normal security check at airports.

While her husband Vadra has to undergo frisking at airports if he travels alone, he is exempted from normal security checks when he travels with Priyanka or any other SPG protectee.

After media reports suggested that the government was contemplating to withdraw the privileges given to Vadra, Priyanka wrote a letter to SPG chief Durga Prasad and asked him to remove the exemption given to her and her family from normal security checks at airports.

"We have no plans as of now to review the facilities given to SPG protectees and those who travel with SPG protectees.

"A high-powered committee headed by Union Home Secretary periodically reviews security of individuals on the basis of threat perception. Security to anyone is given as per the decision of the committee on the basis of threat perception," the official said.

In her letter, Priyanka said Vadra's inclusion in the list was made at the instance of previous SPG chiefs and Delhi Police and not upon any request by "either of us who were informed after the fact".

"Since the government is now reportedly considering the removal of his name, I would like to inform you that I do not feel it will be correct for my children and me to avail the facility of exemption of these checks while entering or exiting airports when we are all travelling together," she wrote.

However, the letter triggered a controversy and Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju said it was better to leave the issue to the security agencies to take a decision.

"One should not politicise security issues. I have failed to understand why someone is trying to score a political brownie point. Security does not depend on whims and fancies of any individual," Rijiju had said.

    Wise Modi and wise Priyanka.
Thing is, most of the readers in this forum or in TimesofIndia, think that SPG protection is demanded, and abuse the Gandhis with choicy words, as though they are personal property. People with limited (or No) knowledge of politics, governance and administration, should stop making cheap comments. It actually shows their own lack of knowledge of national issues.

Why do agencies know that the Gandhi family (or anyone else)is under threat? by whom? I am sure for personal enmity, SPG protection is not given. The people hold significance at national level and there is threat to national interests, and that is why they are protected.

If anyone thinks that SPG protection is wah... take a walk. Perpetually having to worry about self/family safety is not a good feeling.

Extreme diplomacy by all the parties, nation is on the right track. Score is Advantage Priyanka.

Priyanka Gandhi is fast turning tables on Modi's juggernaut. She was smart enough to 'time' her letter and the make her view public through media. The govt was caught off-guard and Priyanka proved smarter. She has more 'Indira' than 'Sonia' in her and if and when she takes active plunge into politics, political equations will change drastically. She isn't a 'silent Gandhi' who would listen to all the criticism hurled at her and keep quiet. She returns the criticism with compliment and has the guts to hold on to her views. So the BJP which talked so tall about reviewing security, frisking, now takes shelter under the 'officials view'. Congress has almost lost everything and at this stage has nothing to lose. And those who have nothing to lose, prestige, power, authority can be very dangerous at times. Either they destruct themselves or destroy their opponents. It will surely be an all-out attack. Modi and the govt need to be extra cautious with their moves. Voters have very high and almost unrealistic hopes from this govt and hence each move of theirs will be watched carefully. Just as it happened in Smriti Irani's case, they may justify their 'wrong' moves but these kind of 'justifications' may not go well with those voters who have voted Modi and not BJP. The govt should understand that the gap between ‘BJP’ and ‘Modi’ is huge and this needs to be bridged in at the earliest. If not the ‘gap’ may become ‘gulf’ that can never be bridged!

@Gladson,, Like someone mentioned if Modi had contested in Cong,, he would not have won. The common has hated Cong so much. Also the public are fully educated and are aware of the fake 'Gandhis'. Anatnio Maino Khan and Raul Vinci Khan are unable to fool Indian public anymore. Now that Modi is elected, and if he does not deliver he too will be kicked out in the coming election by the people. The equation is so simple.

Quote "A high-powered committee headed by Union Home Secretary periodically reviews security of individuals on the basis of threat perception. Security to anyone is given as per the decision of the committee on the basis of threat perception," Unquote. Are we talking about the security provided to a person or Exemption from security checks at airports? I think two are different issues. Is exempting security checks at airports is part of security provided to that individual? What is this mix up. Does it mean security check at Air port is itself a threat? Oh! confused.
