Indians told not to bring in medicines banned in UAE

Dubai, Aug 8 (PTI): India has warned its nationals visiting the UAE against carrying prohibited medicines to the Gulf nation to avoid "landing on the wrong side of the law".

The directive against carrying prohibited medicines to UAE came from the Indian ambassador in the country after the arrest of an Indian national at Abu Dhabi International Airport last month, for carrying nine small stamps of psychedelic drug lysergic acid diethylamide or (LSD).

"This point cannot be reiterated enough. Indians who travel to the UAE should carefully check the dos and donts we have listed on the embassy's website while carrying medicines," Indian ambassador, T P Seetharam said.

"We keep talking about the issue time and again. But people are still landing on the wrong side of the law by bringing banned medicines," he was quoted as saying by the Gulf News.

Seetharam said that most Indian expatriates prefer to buy medicines in India and bring them to UAE as they find it cheaper back home, but many of them end up in jail due to ignorance.

The embassy has also listed a detailed nine-point guideline on its website for bringing medicines and drugs in the country. The list gives details of prohibited drugs, as well as the permissible quantity of certain drugs that can be brought into the country.

Patients can bring a maximum three-month supply if the medicine is not available in UAE provided they obtain the prior approval of the Drug Control Department. The advisory also warns Indians against bringing poppy seeds, which is strictly banned in UAE, as well as qat leaf, betel leaf or nuts, niswar and gutka. A 31-year-old Indian was jailed last month for four years for smuggling and possessing 102.5 grams of poppy seeds which he claimed he had brought to use in cooking.

People go to these countries for livelihood. Otherwise we must avoid them. Though Dubai seems to be slightly better of the lot most of these countries are barbaric. Go at your own risk. You can ban things like poppy seeds which people use in day to day cooking but to punishing people for possessing such a small quantity which they may be genuinely carrying shows the barbaric nature of local law.

In countries where alcohol is banned or restricted , there misuse of medicine for hallucination and recreational purpose is rampant and a very serious social concern. In these countries people who cant afford to buy these 'drugs' are addicted to cheaper snipping stimulants like petrol, surgical spirit, glue, nail polish etc!!!

How do u expect any normal, individual or a labour class ppl who r d ones who travel mostly to dxb to know abt which medicines to not get while boarding...there should be a guidelines which should be given by Indian govt or use govt to all those who travel to uae, like when a passenger books tickets to uae the airlines should provide a list of do's nd dont's which shuld be written in both English and regional language, so tht no one gets caught for innocently careyin a medicine.

Yes allen. Last time guy travelling to Germany via Dubai transit was caught for banned drugs and was imprisoned or pay a heavy fine.

I feel this gimmick is to buy their own medicines or medicine sold in UAE.

I have two questions here. If medicines are banned in UAE why they have not banned here in India ?

Is there any international law for medicine content and dosage ? if yes then why India do not follow them ?

Can you please publish list of medicine names and their company so that we can pass the information to all ?

Every time cross check they give in uae hospitals, mostly they give painkillers, recently i got urethral stone, from 4 tabs 3 were pain killers, so i consulted doctor in India, send him my reports, & brought the medicines from there. Other option I had to go on emergency leave thats what even doctor in uae suggested too, uae hospitals & pharmacy s are afraid of getting fines, so they always want to play safe. You will not get right medication in uae, ask your friends, everyone would've gone through this once. Most of the emiratis other than fever going abroad for medication. We cnt afford it.

I agree with you, the mistakes of doctors are innumerable, I think medicine has lost the narrative, Everything is backwards everything is upside down. Doctors are the same as lawyers, the sole difference being that lawyers only rob you, but doctors rob you and kill you too...
