Mangalore: Five main junctions set for immediate development

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Aug 30: "Busy junctions in the city, Hampankatta, Ambedkar, Bunts Hostel, PVS and Mallikatte junctions are being taken up for immediate development. The city corporation has taken up the task of preparing estimate for this purpose," said city mayor, Mahabala Marla. He was addressing the general session of the city corporation council organized in the council hall here.

Marla said that the city corporation administration is very much aware of the foot-path related problems faced by the citizens. Informing those present at the session that a special meeting of the city corporators would be convened to discuss this issue within two weeks, he explained that a in-principle sanction for building railway over-bridge at Jeppu at a cost of Rs 12.6 lac has already been sent, and that in-principle sanction has also been given for the construction of underpass at Jappu Kudupady.

A number of corporators urged the city mayor to initiate criminal action against anyone who draws water from the pipeline of the city corporation without authorization. Several corporators drew the attention of the mayor towardsroad and other works that have not been taken up although tender process was completed long back relating to them. The mayor said an emergency meeting will be held within 15 days to take steps about such cases.

When chief whip of the corporation, M Shashidhar Hegde, brought up a request made by Karnataka Urban Development and Coastal Environmental Management Project (KUDCEMP) for waiver of rent due by it towards the office space it has been occupying at the city corporation's complex at Kadri here, several corporators vehemently opposed the proposal, sighting that it has become a routine for government offices to keep rent payment in arrears for prolonged time and then seek waiver.

The mayor also said that as proposed by corporator, Ashok D K, plans to set up ATMs at city corporation bus stops and to provide toilets at these bus stops are under consideration.

When BJP corporator, Vijay Kumar, wanted to know whether City Centre Mall in the city is in order in collecting parking fee for the vehicles visiting the complex, an official said that owners of buildings over two floors have to arrange for their own parking. The city mayor said that further steps will be taken relating to this issue after studying rules and regulations governing them.

    Mr. Mayor,

It is advisable that you invite some of the police officials more particularly the traffic police for your meetings. Good foot paths are the utmost need of the day. These should not be death traps.First the poor pedestrians need protection and then the motorists.

In the fitness of the situation it is very necessary that all sensitive areas need to be attended to. Apart from the areas mentioned in the report, Father Muller's circle Kankanady Circle), Bendur Well circle, Clock Tower and some areas need to be inspected before taking any final decision. Traffic has increased tremendously over the past few years and therefore it is up-most importance that before taking any decisions meetings are called with some important members of the public and joint meetings (Police - Corporators - public) are called for long and protracted discussions to decide upon remedial measures.

Mr. Mayor - I am ninety-three years and I continue to drive in Mangalore City. I am prepared to share my views with you for any action that you may decide to take.

First lets complete the pending work, rather than digging some more roads without having the completion date. We as citizens should have some transparency on completion date for any of the initiative corporation takes.

Mr Mayor. Can you please let the public know whether it is legal for shop owners/ their watchmen to prevent the public from parking in open spaces which is the setback area in from of new buildings.
every one of the developers who had to give a setback gave it to the MCC for the common good of the public and not for the shopkeepers to claim the setback as their rightful parking area.
If this is not clarified by a public notice in all newspapers by MCC then I will have no option but to file a suit that MCC is in league with these developers/ shopkeepers to fool the public.
Come clean Mr Mayor and the DC too.

    JEPPU KUDUPADY UNDERPASS.

Joke of the year by the authorities.

45 Years back they had planned to broaden the jeppu kudupady road which is still pending.
In the lane when 2 cars have to pass one has to reverse or wait at a broader gap for the other to pass.
Dear officials first plan the broadening of the road so that you reach the extreme end where the underpass can be built.

Mangalore City requires and deserves a face lift. It all begins from road expansions, parks and recreations, clean and well paved roadways, decent and safe side-walks plus proper sanitation and timely trash collections. Amidst all these requirements, proper junctions with orderly traffic movement is also essential.

All said and done, each and every step of new thought requires proper budgeting and orderly spending. All the new developments can be implemented by additional new taxes and/or creation of additional City Bonds.

Each and every move takes time and money, and also requires proper planning and proper contractors with proper tools and proper people. Renovating and re-shaping junctions is a systematic process that needs proper planning so as to avoid further traffic jams and commotions during peak hours.

In many developed countries all these renovations and repairs are carried out during night time when the traffic is low and the movement of people is also low.

Rome was not built overnight. It takes time to plan, allocate, decide and implement. Patience is the virtue.

Mayor ji, for the busy junctions to function without any hassles first the roads need to be widened.. Especially the PVS Bunts Hostel Road must become a 4 - lane.. Until then nothing is going to change between these two junctions. Speaking about the other junctions i.e Mallikatte and Ambedkar, installing signals would partially do the job. Again I would say 4 - laning of roads from Nantoor to Mallikatte atleast to reduce the traffic intensity. Hampankatta junction works pretty much fine now and may just need some few final touches :)
Expansion of roads is necessary because the traffic is increasing every single day and roads seem to get narrower for the increasing traffic.
