Explain rules for Metro’s fare panel: Bombay high court

Mumbai, Sep 2 (TNN): The Bombay high court on Monday asked the Centre to file an affidavit by September 18 to explain the procedure for appointment of a fare-fixing committee for Mumbai Metro, after the government disclosed that it was yet to form the panel.

The HC is hearing MMRDA's appeal against a single bench order denying it right to decide fares. RInfra and MMOPL had told the HC earlier that until a committee decided the fares, they would keep the rates at Rs 10 for up to 3 km, Rs 15 up to 8 km and Rs 20 for longer journey (up to 20 km) till September 30. This assurance stands.

The HC had directed the Centre a month ago to set up a fare panel for Mumbai Metro by September 30. A division bench, headed by Chief Justice Mohit Shah, gave the Centre more time to file its affidavit. The HC had earlier directed the Centre to inform by September 1 whether it had formed the panel.
