Mangalore, Sep 5: After the state government evolved regulations on organ transplantation and gave powers to hospitals, four hospitals functioning from Bangalore have set up screening committees, each on their own, to decide upon the issues of organ transplantations and have started operating individually for the last six months, said health and family welfare minister, U T Khadar to journalists, in a press meet at circuit house here on September 4.
"This has eased the earlier lengthy procedure of hospitals having to seek permission from the zonal committee formed by the state government, the only body that dealt with these cases so far," he added.
"Many other hospitals can send proposals to set up their own committee to the state government. Permission would be granted if hospitals succeed in meeting the guidelines of the government to formulate screening committees," he said.
Khadar congratulated the doctors involved in the organ transplantation in Bangalore and Chennai, and said this was a momentous achievement in the field of organ transplantation. He further said that it was possible after the state government streamlined rules on organ transplantation.
"Earlier, there was only one zonal committee headed by a retired judge to deal with such cases. This caused a delay in seeking permission before the hospitals carried out organ transplantation. The decision to decentralize the power to the committee was taken in view of speeding up the process," he added.
He informed that four private hospitals - Manipal, BGS, Colombia Asia, and Narayana Hrudayala were granted permission to form their own committees by the government in connection with organ transplantation. He emphasised that the hospitals should fulfil the criteria of the government to set up the committee.
Speaking on the escalation of crimes in Ullal, Khadar said that he had talks with the commissioner to maintain peace in the area. He instructed the commissioner to form a special team to crack down on ganja and illegal substances making inroads into the region. He said there may be links between crimes and drugs as these elements instigate the mind to carry out crimes.
He also advised the commissioner to bring in a few changes in the stations as current officials failed to arrest the accused in recent crimes. He said it is the duty of the police to maintain law and order in Ullal.
