Mangalore, Sep 5: The District Crime Intelligence Bureau (DCIB) have arrested a man accused of killing his wife, 16 years after the crime took place.

Raja alias Raju, a resident of Kumpala in Bantwal, was on the run since 1998, until finally being arrested in Tamil Nadu by the DCIB police.

Addressing a press meet here on Friday September 5, superintendent of police (SP) Dr Sharanappa said that on July 21, 1998, Raju, in a drunken stupor, had stabbed his wife Baby to death following a quarrel with her and fled the spot. The couple were staying in a rented house. Bantwal rural police had registered a murder case under section 302 of IPC against the accused.

Raju had escaped to Tamil Nadu, but despite several visits to the state, the district police failed to locate him.

Recently, the DCIB police received information that he was staying in Dharapuram taluk of Tirupur district in Tamil Nadu. The police arrested him and brought him to the city.

The SP appreciated the efforts of police personnel Uday Rai, Taranath S, Palanivelu, Iqbal A E, Vasunaik, DCIB assistant SI Sanjeeva Purusha and others who were part of the investigation and awarded them certificates and prize money.

The SP further said that there were many other cases like these and the police department has decided to pursue old cases and catch hold of absconding persons accused in those cases.

Asked to comment on the Shyamprasad suicide case related to the sexual harassment complaint against the head of Ramachandrapura Math, the SP said the police are trying to authenicate the death note found at the crime spot.

It is indeed a great feat that a murderer should be apprehended and caught after sixteen long years. Of course the credit goes to our efficiently run police department under the guidance of a Super cop - Superintendent of Police Dr. Sharanappa who means business and does a great job and also ensures that the people working with him do likewise

I join several others in saying kudos to the department of crime in tracing the culprit.

I specially compliment the police personnel Uday Rai, Taranath S, Palani Geli, Iqbal A E, Vasunaga, DCIB assistant SI Sanjeeva Purusha on a mission well accomplished.
