Jeddah: Karnataka NRI Forum urges govt to allow NRIs to answer CET

Media Release

Jeddah, Sep 10: Karnataka NRI Forum, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia has appealed to the government of Karnataka to grant CET permission for NRI students of Karnataka origin, through Mangalore MLA J R Lobo.

Karnataka NRI Forum, Jeddah and Mangalore MLA J R Lobo jointly appealed to government of Karnataka to consider the long-pending problem of non-admission of Karnataka-based NRI students to government colleges through CET.

A memorandum has been submitted by Karnataka NRI Forum president Roshan Philip Rodrigues through MLA Mangalore J R Lobo to higher education minister R V Deshpande.

According to KNRI Forum, Jeddah, there are around five million Indians working in the six GCC countries and around two million Indians working in Saudi Arabia alone. It has been proven time and again that nearly 80% of all Indians are engaged in blue collar and mediocre level jobs where the salaries are not very attractive compared to the present salary scale of government and private companies in India.

Now, with this mediocre income, when the children pass their XII standard, through Indian CBSE, Delhi, the children are not allowed to appear for the state sponsored CET tests, especially in Karnataka, not even the meritorious students. They are told that they should avail seats in professional colleges like medical and engineering under NRE quota by paying huge donations, which ranges from 75 lakhs to 1.5 crore, depending upon the college, course and the state they choose. “The economic condition of many Kannadiga NRIs, particularly working in the Gulf region is not so well as earlier, and many of them are managing hand to mouth existence. Many of them are not in a position to pay heavy capitation fee in private colleges," the Forum said.

Kerala, Maharashtra and almost all northern states allow NRI children to appear for CET exams of their states.

President of Forum requested Mangalore MLA J R Lobo and higher education minister R V Deshpande to do all that is necessary to scrap the policy of excluding NRI students from Karnataka state CET exams and give them an equal opportunity together with local candidates to appear for CET. Let merit be the criterion for both local and NRI students and nothing else, he said.

Higher education minister R V Deshpande gave assurance of doing the needful. J R Lobo said that he will take necessary action for this cause and will be regularly in touch with the government of Karnataka for positive action.

Karnataka NRI Forum Jeddah has also requested all Karnataka associations of GCC and other nations to send such memorandum through their embassies.

Hi, Really a good move to include NRIs for competing in CET. As one of the readers had commented that there are atttempts to include Beary language, I would suggest removal of "mother tongue" issue itself, as nearly 40% of kannadigas have mother tongue other than Kannada/Tulu/Kodava. What about them? Let the student take Kannada test to get thro'. Keep other conditions like study for 7 years for parent/s and knowledge of kannada. That will help others who have mother tongue other than the ones mentioned above. Are those who speak Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Urdu, Marathi, Konkani, Beary, Malayalam etc are not Kannadigas? Those who are born, studied, in Karnataka, but, due to their jobs/necessities are living abroad with their children? Please give equal opportunities to all. In other states, there are NRI seats at a lower fees that in Karnataka, and we are sending our children there, where as this year only more than 16,000 seats were unfilled in CET COMEDK. Hope good sense prevails.

Why so far no politicians, nor NRI's took this major issues, may be political pressure from ENGG/Medical colleges just to loot money in the name of NRI's. If this mission succeeded, i am sure Roshan philip, JR Lobo and not to forget Daiji for their immense support for the good cause of NRI parents

Direct flights to Kuwait, and appeal to Govt. to allow NRI's to answer CET very good steps taken by JR Lobo and NRI Forum president Roshan Philip.
This not only benefits the students and parents, but so many colleges in Karnataka also.
Many colleges are not getting enough students.
By getting more students, Colleges can retain some benefits to them and Pass on some benefits to student community by reducing fees.
Many NRI's of Karnataka are compelled to take admission in other states where NRI's are allowed to answer CET.

Mr. J R Lobo is not like other politicians. He is not working based on religion and party. He is equally good with Hindus, Christians and Muslims. Also he is 100% non-corrupt, simple and humble. Also he is always available in his office and meeting people continuously. Everyday more than 200 people come to his office and get their problems solved. We need to support such leaders irrespective of their party.

Good move Mr. Roshan. May God bless you.

Many years concern is of a direct flight from Jeddah to IXE (Mangalore) either via Dammam/Riyadh which is purely a gigantic hallucination of Mangaloreans who are breathing here in Jeddah. Can this issue be raised along with ? Thank you.
