Mangalore, Sep 16: "Showing concern towards the environment, developed countries have banned kerosene; similarly Mangalore and Ullal town municipality too will be made kerosene-free," said district incharge minister B Ramanath Rai.

Addressing a press meet at the DC's office here on Tuesday September 16, he said, "We are aiming to provide LPG access to every household, and thereby make the city kerosene-free by November 1. This attempt will be the first of its kind in the state," he added.

Briefing on the scheme, DC A B Ibrahim said, "The project will cost Rs 4,000 per household. Leading banks including SCDCC Bank have come forward to provide loans to purchase gas kits. The main aim is to provide LPG connections to each house. People can pay Rs 200 as monthly installments. But to avail the loan, customers have to submit documents to the bank and have to possess a bank account."

He also said that making the city kerosene-free during Deepavali is also a part of the scheme.

"A special campaign will be organized at Lalbagh, Suratkal and Kavoor within city limits and in Ullal at the town municipal office on October 8 and 9. The second round of the campaign will be conducted on October 18 and 19. Department of food and civil supplies, gas companies and banks will also be present for the campaign. LPG services will be made available as soon as customers register themselves," he said.

Mangalore and Ullal will be announced as kerosene-free on Kannada Rajyostava on November 1.

B Ramanath Rai also added that with a view to curb elephant menace, Rs 212 crore has been approved by the cabinet and will be sanctioned in the next budget. The money will be used to build strong iron fences in areas that are prone to elephant menace.

He further informed that the process to construct Rang Mandir at Marakada village in Bondel has begun.

"The building will be situated on an area of 3.35 acres. The total cost of the structure will be Rs 24 crore and the work will be completed within two years," he said.

The building will house offices of Kannada and culture department, Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy and Karnataka Beary Academy.

Rang Mandir will have seating arrangement for 1500 people and will also have seminar halls, an art gallery, an exhibition center and four guest houses, Rai said.

Why not we also can try to be fuel free (or considerably reduce the fuel consumption) to eliminate health hazardous air pollution and peace disturbing sound pollution from multiplying vehicles on roads?
Why not the huge dead weight of commuters and goods on wheels can be used as a powerful pushing force to save a huge volume of fuel and generate free energy, by considering the heavy burden as a blessed boon?
Yes, we anticipate a dramatic change in the surface transport sector.

Very well said Mr.John Dsouza. there should be some law to take control of "multiplying vehicles on roads". And I also hope 212 crores to curb elephant menace will be used in a effective manner.

Right, ban kerosene(poor peoples' cooking fuel) and bring thermal power plants, nuclear power plants and divert nethravathi river. That will improve mangalore's environment problem.

Ministers.. for 63 years after independence we the mangaloreans are electing politicians who are good for nothing.
If our D.K politicians are having any vision for Mangalore then we would have been not working in out of mangalore or abroad. We have Sea,rivers, railways ,Airport , rich mineral resources. But the D.K is still is like rural undeveloped city,Village and town without any facilities and Industries.. Now these people speak about not using kerosene.. Firstly..Generate Power and provide 24/7 Electricity and provide Water to every house. Industries other than Education institute and Builders building high rise building without any proper planning are grooming for few beneficiaries only. God save our land and future young generation from vision-less politicians of BJP/CONGRESS .

Kerosene vendors used to yell in the lanes and by lanes of M'lore some time back in red tanks on wheels like trolley's. The smell for some was heavenly and for some nauseating.

it is a welcome move but lot of things need to be addressed. there is lot of migrant labour in mangalore who cook using kerosene. my maid does not have either APL or BPL card , as she does not have address proof. her owner is refusing to give a rent agreement. she is using kerosene available at 60 rs per litre in some ration shops.
now her only option is commercial gas which is unaffordable.i don t know how interests of all poor people will be protected. I told her to apply for BPL card but she says they ask huge bribes for BPL card,

But for getting new gas connection one requires atleast APL Ration Card. But under Tughlaq raj of Dinesh GundaRao even the APL card of 43000 families have been cancelled recently on 1st August just for not sending SMS with numbers of Aadhar Card including that of Senior Citizens.
Can Ramanath Rai put some brain in the head of Dinesh Gandurao?
