Bangalore, Sep 18: Archbishop of Bangalore Dr Bernard Moras and seven other Bishops of different Dioceses of the State met Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Rudabhai Vala at Raj Bhavan on Thursday with a request to urge the Centre to exert pressure for ending the persecutionof thousands of Christians and other minorities in Iraq, Syria and other African countries by the Islamic extremists.

The Archbishop, who is also the President of the Karnataka Region Catholic Bishops’ Council (KRCBC) andAll Karnataka United Christian Forum for Human Rights (AKUCFHR), was accompanied by the Bishop of Mangalore Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza, Bishop of Belgaum Peter Machado, Bishop of Bhadravathi Mar Joseph Arumachadath, Bishop of Chikamangalur Thomasappa Anthony Swamy, Bishop of Karwar .DerekFernandes, Bishop of Mysore Thomas Antony Vazhapilly, Msgr JJayanathan and Msgr C Francis, both Vicar Generals, Fr Ronnie Prabhu, PRO of KRCBC and AKUCFHR), Abraham T J, Anti Corruption Activist and President ICU-FKCCA and Aida D'cuna, Social Activist.

The delegation led by the Archbishop of Bangalore submitted a memorandum to the State Governor to be forwarded to the PresicdentPranab Kumar Mukkherjee, which expressed concern and anguish at the plight of the Christians and other minorities in Iraq and Syria and said as per unofficial estimates about One lakh and Seventy Thousand people have already been killed.

"We strongly feel that the problem in Iraq is caused by a misunderstanding of Islam, those who propagate the holocaust are actually unaware of the true Islam and Quran’s teachings," the memorandum said.

It was unfortunate that the Christians and also the other communities in India have maintained a silence regarding the persecution of innocent children, men and women in Iraq, which is by itself violence in silence. When we see violence and remain as silent spectators, our silence is also an equally condemnable violence and injustice against humanity, if we do not raise our voice against such barbaric acts. Hence, we have urged one and all to raise their voices, or be ready to accept the blame that they are also a part of the violence by their silence,” the memorandum said.

The Archbishop and the delegation of Bishops informed the Governor of the fast and prayers observed by the Christians belonging to various denominations in Bangalore and other places of Karnataka on Friday, September 12, and also a mass rally and prayers at the St Joseph’s Indian High School Grounds on Sunday, September 14, which was observed as a ``Black Sunday” to express solidarity with the suffering people.

The delegation explained that leaders of different Christian denominations like Catholics, Church of South India (CSI), Methodists, Baptists, Pentecost, Syrian Orthodox, Assemblies of God and Representatives of the Federation of all Christian churches and Organizations in Karnataka as well as Sri ShanthaveeraKolada Math Swamiji; BJP leader and former Deputy Chief Minister R Ashok; Congress MLA N A Harris; a prominent Muslim Leader Aga Sultan and others took part in this Rally and addressed the large gathering of priests, nuns, Christians and people of other religious communities, when special prayers were also offered for the victims and displaced persons in the flood havoc in Jammu and Kashmir.

As a sequel of the above denouncement and public condemnation of what is happening against the Christians in Iraq, Syria and other parts of the world, we, the delegation Bishops of different denominations and leaders of all Christian churches and organizations in Karnataka led by Dr Bernard Moras submitted the memorandum urging the Governor to draw the attention of the Central Government to the plight of Christians in Iraq and to demand a strong denouncement by India of the holocaust of Christians in Iraq.

The delegation also appealed to all right thinking Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists and Parsis to condemn the execution of Christians in Iraq in the name of religion.

I do appreciate the step taken by the Archbishop/Bishops of Karnataka. Many are concerned and are caring. At this juncture best thing would be to kneel and pray for the violence to end and for the rehabilitation of the displaced persons.God is the same for Indians, Christians,Muslims, names only are different. When we pray tp Him He will let us know what his plans for His people in the Arab world and what are His plans for all of us.Pray and pray more and more daily as we do in Institute's Chapel every day.

Christians are a very silent minority. We never react to violence with violence as that begets more violence. But let the world hear our roar, and let God hear our plea. With the BJP we find more peace and understanding and the miscreants who used the BJP name to create disturbances are silent as now they know they cannot spoil the name of the BJP as the BJP are in power and will come down hard on them.

    Dear Mr. Joe Gonsalves,
Though I do not wish to comment much on your thoughts. is this exercise be fruitful? We are talking about the Christians persecution in Iraq-Syria. First of all, is Christians in India now safe? Is so called Minorities lift their heads up and dare to say anywhere and anytime that India is safe for all castes and religions now? The answer is NO which we all know!! The Archbishop and his delegation meet the Governor who has just appointed by the BJP Government in Centre and do we know the credentials of this new Governor? If not better to know it and then let us try to understand it is worth taking such matters to him or to his attention!! In our own State the Christians and Minorities are not safe. Let us not forget the persecution of Christians that took place in history on 14th of September, 2009 and the effect is still suffering, hatred, anger and revenge!! Let us try to come out from this evils in our own District, State, Country before we talk about persecutions that are taking in other Countries or Continents!! JAI HO!!

It is a useless exercise. The government of Iraq is not persecuting Christians. Better raise some aid and send to the persecuted Christians through some helping agency. That is more useful. Government to put pressure on whom?

    Dear mdsouza,
Condemning the killings of humanity in Iraq by the Govt on behalf of people of India is a tradition of human civilization.
Like abduction of Nurses in Iraq, somebody had intervention had positive impact.
Not only Pope, should World community intervene, surely will isolate the terrorists and their actions will back fire on them.
We should bear that in mind and act on it.

It is good to see that our Archbishop Bernard Moras playing the LEAD ROLL in making the right approach to the right people to help our persecuted brethren in Irag and other places.

It is time that people of all denominations realize that we are children of the same MOTHER EARTH and that we have right to live and practice any religion.

Where will this fanaticism take us?.

Archbishop Bernard - We the Christians more particularly those hailing from Mangalore thank you sincerely for standing by us.

We also thank Governor Vajubhai Rudabhai Vala for the patient hearing he has given to you and the other bishops who attended the meeting. Hope the outcome of the meeting will have some tangible results.

What a pity! Even on the web some have the guts to disagree the condemnation of persecution of human beings for no apparent reason. Is there no solution to this unabated killing in the name of religion? What the world leaders have to say about the killing of one lakh and seventy thousand people in one place. Shame on their position they need to die out of shame.

I understand the concerns of Karnataka Bishops. Who is killing Christians in Iraq? Is it Iraqi Government? Is it ISIS?
What can the Governor do? Everyone knows Governors do not have any power. What can Indian government do?
Why is Vatican not doing anything?
My knowledge is in Iraq, muslims were also killed not only Christians.

Approximately, 1/3 of the world population, the largest population is Christianity but when some countries target the Christians as shooting objects, that is too hard to understand.

While the non-Christians have all the freedom of worship in Christian countries, how the Christians are suppressed and tormented in those countries where Christians are a minority, that is too hard to comprehend

Mr. Shetty: If I happened to see an Hindu or any other religious faith is mistreated by an American of any faith, I will stand with the Hindu for his or her right. Forty three years back, the discrimination of the U.S. in between the White and Black was unbearable, and without any fear I did attend the Black People's Church and some of my White friends didn't like it. I told them, the White missionaries went to the African countries but if we can't worship together the same GOD sitting together, that is fake religion.

Discrimination of the minorities in any country or any faith must not be tolerated. Now the Christians are severely persecuted in many parts of the world so first of all, the Christian community all over the world will have to raise their voice.

The world has to condemn the atrocities being committed on these people in Iraq and Syria. I fully agree and hope that India steps up and involves itself in the global effort.

However, my question would be what is the concern of this Bishop. It is just Christianity or is it because these are Indian's. If let us say Indian were being massacred would they have shown the same solidarity.?. I think the need of the hour is to be Indian first and religion next.
