Mangalore: Fresh reports of violence have come in from Farangipet where a huge mob destroyed the police out post. The police had to resort to firing in the air to disperse the mob.

Miscreants went on a rampage and attacked a tailors shop, a restaurant. Two persons were severely injured in the riots.

The violence kept the vehicles on the National Highway stranded for one hour. A beeline of buses plying through the region was finally permitted to ply under police protection.

The Farangipet region which is a hyper-sensitive area was given a police outpost a few years back so that peace is maintained during times of riots and communal tension. The scantly equipped outpost became an easy prey to the attacks by miscreants on Wednesday, locals told.

Mangalore, Oct 5: Although the state-wide bundh called on Wednesday did not get the best out of DK district, instances of violence brought life in city to a standstill on Wednesday night when an issue of illegal transportation of cattle turned violent in Kudroli.

The Bajrang Dal activists on Wednesday night obtained a tip-off on the movement of a van carrying cattle to Kudroli slaughter house. However the van carrying cattle collided with a Qualis, an auto rickshaws and a Bolero injuring a woman. The Bolero driver not knowing that the van was carrying cattle followed it to Kudroli where a group was waiting to intercept the van. According to sources the mob attacked the van.

The news of these accidents and the assualt which took place at around 9 pm between Lady Hill and Lalbhagh spread like wild fire.

DK SP Dayananda and MLA N Yogish Bhat who rushed to the spot tried to pacify the mob.

Members of another community gathered at Alake and went on a rampage. They destroyed two vehicles parked on the street and also pelt stones at shops. Two pedestrians were also assaulted of whom one has been reported to have major injuries.

The tension continued and cast its shadow on several areas in and around the city. Reports of violence have reached our office from several regions.

While a bundh call has been given, instances of violence have been reported in Pumpwell, Gorigudda, Capitanio, Bajal, Vamanjoor and Kottara.

A shop was set ablaze at Kottara and roads were blocked with pipes and tyres in Vamanjoor.

Sources said that 5 rickshaws, 2 lorries and 2 bikes were destroyed in the violent attacks. Tyres were also burnt on several roads of the city.

The situation is now under control after the police made adequate security arrangements in the sensitive regions of the city and around. With private and service busses going off the road, office goers and school children were put to great inconvenience.
