Mangaluru: Ganja peddler gets two years imprisonment

Mangaluru, Dec 18: Dakshina Kannada chief district and sessions court has sentenced a person, who was found to be peddling ganja, to two years rigorous imprisonment.

The accused, Muhammed Siraj (30) from Taudugoli in Naringanawas arrested five years back when trying to sell ganja at the beach in Subhas Nagar, Ullal.

At the same time, the court has exonerated second accused, Sharif (31) from Natekal of the charges.

The policemen attached to coastal security police station, after gathering information that the two persons had been trying to peddle ganja at the beach at Subhas Nagar, had rushed there on July 14, 2009. While the policemen found 1.4 kg of ganja in the possession of Siraj, Sharif had succeeded in running away.

The then coastal security police inspector, Mukund Nayak, had investigated the case and filed charge sheet against Siraj.

Chief district and sessions judge, Uma A G, who heard the case, sentenced Siraj to two years rigorous imprisonment besides imposing a fine of Rs 10,000. He has been ordered to undergo six additional months of imprisonment in case of failure to pay up fine. The judgment was delivered on December 17.

The prosecution was represented by chief public prosecutor, Pushparaj K Adyantaya, who examined the witnesses and presented arguments.
