Belagavi: Tiger kills a woman at Bhimgad sanctuary

Belagavi, Dec 26: It has been confirmed now that the woman who was suspected to have been killed by a wild animal on Wednesday, was killed indeed by a tiger.

According to forest officials, the tiger that was released last month into the Bhimgad wildlife sanctuary in Khanapur taluk has killed the woman.

Anjana Appanna Hanba(23), a resident of Mudagai village near Jamboti in Khanapur taluk, was killed by the tiger when she went to fetch water. Her body was found later.

A forest officer said that though the big cat had a radio collar, the department personnel were unable to track its exact location due to some technical problems. He also said that the orders have been issued to shoot the big cat at sight.

The family of the victim will be given a compensation of Rs 5 lacs, it is leant.

In another incident, the tiger reportedly killed a horse at Dorli village, a few kilometres from Mudagai on Thursday December 25.

On Thursday, the residents from surrounding villages staged a protest against the forest department for not capturing the tiger. They said that they would not cremate the victim’s body unless the department killed or captured the tiger.

The protest got violent after a few irate villagers tried to manhandle the police and the forest department officials. It is said that a few police and forest personnel have suffered injuries during the protest.
