Mumbai, Jan 10: After a second day at home since he was at the gates of Yerawada jail in Pune, the prison authorities have summoned him back to jail, asking for him to surrender on Saturday. Sanjay Dutt had put in an application on the 27th of December for an extension on the 14 day furlough that he had been granted for New Year. Since his application was still under process, the actor was allowed to return to his home after having reported back to the jail at the end of his leave.

Rajendra Dhamane, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Prisons said that, "Local police has not given a positive report on granting extension to Dutt's furlough. They felt that extension was not needed for his treatment which is why I rejected his plea." The actor's lawyer Rizwan Merchant confirmed that having received the news that the application had been rejected, Dutt would surrender himself to the prison authorities later in the day.

Assistant Commissioner of Police for Bandra, Shivaji Kolekar had been given the duty to inform the 55 year old actor that his leave had been rejected and that he was required to present himself to the authorities concerned. Starting in May 2013, Sanjay Dutt is undergoing his 5 year jail term that he had been sentenced to by the court for possession of illegal firearms that allegedly was part of the arsenal meant to be used during the blasts that took place in Mumbai, back in 1993.

He has already taken leave thrice from his jail term, once stating his own health and the second time, that of his wife Manyata Dutt and this last time asking to be home for New Years. However the second time round his leave came under intense scrutiny as his 'unwell' wife was spotted out and about.
