Mangalore, Feb 21: When inspector Jayant Shetty of Ullal police station was transferred last week, these columns had reported that it was nothing but sheer politics.  Now this has been proved very true with the new order of government re-appointing Jayant Shetty to Ullal.

As reported earlier Jayant Shetty was transferred and inspector P A Hegde was appointed in his place.  However, P A Hegde who was serving in Coastal Guards had not yet taken charge.  Jayant Shetty's sudden transfer had raised several questions specially with regard to the interference of politician in police department.

It was later known that he was transferred owing to pressure from a local businessman who was booked for duping a foreigner a few days ago.  The businessman who has a strong political influence had used all his higher connections in transferring Jayant Shetty who has long been considered as a disciplined and sincere cop.  Having had the opportunity of heading the newly-formed Anti-Rowdy Squad way back in mid 1990's he had been a nightmare to anti-social elements wherever he was posted.

This had always given him a special place in people's mind.  This time around though there was no protest from people, the news of transfer had even gone upto home ministers' chamber.  Having known Jayant Shetty's track record, the home minister is said to have ordered re-appoint him at Ullal despite opposition and pressure from one of his cabinet colleagues who represents the region.
