Moodbidri, Apr 2: MLA representing this constituency and minister, Abhay Chandra Jain, had announced at a press conference held on January 15 this year, that the formation of Moodbidri taluk would be announced during this year's budget presentation, and that a mini Vidhan Soudha will be built here within a year thereafter.

The matter relating to carving out of new taluks as announced in the 2013 budget was withheld by the new state government headed by Siddaramaiah on the pretext of revision of the list and release of grants to the new taluks. The issue of formation of new taluks did not get priority in the 2014 budget.

The matter of giving birth to new taluks, which emerged as a major scoring point in the agendas of political parties and which remained one of the most popular promises made repeatedly during the assembly election, never saw the light of the day. The announcement made by minister, Abhay Chandra Jain, on January 15, got added to the list of mere promises that are not meant to be met.

Activists have been spearheading fights and agitations demanding status of separate taluk for Moodbidri since several decades. It may be recalled that this had been an independent taluk during the period 1910-12 but had been deprived of this status for various reasons thereafter.

Dharmasamrajya, a native of Shirtady here, who had been elected as Brahmavar MLA, had taken the leading role in putting his best efforts to convince the government to create Moodbidri taluk. Reports of committees like Hundekar, Gaddigoudar, and Vasudeva Rao also had mentioned about the need to carve out this taluk. When announcement about Kittur taluk formation on November 1, 2013, was made, hopes of the people here had got wings about chances of getting recognition new taluk.

Moodbidri, which possesses almost all the requisite qualifications for being allotted with the status of taluk, is now known to be a religious and educational hub. Well-equipped courts complex, office of the special tahsildar, internationally renowned educational institutions, and office of the sub-registrar are some of the public facilities this town boasts of.

For these and other facilities to get fortified and to serve the people of the area better, Moodbidri should emerge as a taluk as soon as possible. People of the region are facing problems in getting faster and more efficient government services because of the fact that announcement about taluk formation is getting delayed every time.
