Kerala: Youths fail to save woman's life, but take pictures on mobiles

Thiruvananthapuram, Apr 10 (PTI): In a shocking incident highlighting apathy to human life, two youths, who saw a woman fainting on the rail track on seeing an approaching train, failed to rush to her help, but instead took out their mobiles to capture the ghastly scene of the train ramming her.

The incident took place yesterday at Muttambalam in Kottayam.

Railway officials said the woman, Laila Thankachan (47) was crossing the track when she was hit by the Parasuram express at around 3.30 pm.

The railway gatekeeper, who was in his cabin, waved the red flag to alert the engine driver as the woman fainted and fell on the track, but in vain and the train stopped only after hitting her.

The gatekeeper said the two youths, who were near the woman, instead of helping her, were keen on capturing the impending ghastly tragedy on their mobiles.

However, in another incident yesterday, a 64-year-old man sacrificed his life while trying to save his hearing-impaired neighbour from an approaching train at Kozhikode.

Abdurehman, who was returning from the mosque, noticed the 70-year-old Raman walking on the railway track and saw a train approaching. He rushed to pull him away from the track but both of them were hit and killed on the spot.

The first and foremost lesson that is given in any "First Aid" or "Rescue" Courses is to safeguard yourself. First secure yourself then help others, by all means, to as many as possible.

Think about it, before analyzing these two accidents.

I do agree with you that we have failed very miserably as a society to honor those great human beings who did rescue their lives to save other human beings. Besides, the society and politicians are totally delinquent to honor honest people like the taxi drivers in returning the money they got in their vehicles. If I have failed to honor that person who rescued the person from the railway track, it was my delinquency and apology. Usually, I write the first comments touching such glorious news of sacrifice but the age is getting on the way at times.

Google for this Article titled- Vulture stalking a child in Sudan.
In March 1993, photographer Kevin Carter made a trip to southern Sudan, where he took now iconic photo of a VULTURE waiting for the child to die. This girl child was alive but unable to move as she was emaciated due to thirst & hunger. Carter waited 20 minutes, hoping that the vulture would go away but it didn’t. So, Carter snapped the haunting photo and chased the vulture away, but he did not touch the child nor gave any water & food to child as he was afraid of contracting infectious disease child could have . The photograph was sold to The New York Times where it appeared for the first time on March 26, 1993 as ‘metaphor for Africa’s despair’. overnight millions of readers contacted the newspaper to ask whether the child had survived, but child’s ultimate fate was unknown.
But Carter came under severe criticism for not helping the girl. “The man adjusting his lens to take the right frame of child’s suffering was himself a predator, or another vulture on the scene”- proclaimed the American people.
Carter eventually won the Pulitzer Prize for this photo, but he could not enjoy it. “I’m really, really sorry I didn’t pick the child up,” he confided in a friend. Consumed with the violence he’d witnessed in Sudan, and haunted by the questions as to the little girl’s fate, he committed suicide three months later.

Thank you Mr. Ravi Shenava. As suggested by you I just now searched in Google for this Photo of Kevin Carter titled: Vulture Stalking a Child.
This photo is extremely shocking and gruesome! It simply shakes the viewer's conscious. It is not surprising that the Photographer Committed Suicide three months later due to very deep guilty feeling.

Two year ago there was an explosion of Gas Tanker near Uppinangaddi and many people were half burnt and they were crying for water but onlookers captured their crying scene on the mobile instead of providing water or some other help. Some people could have been saved if they were provided with timely water and help. This proves everywhere Humanity is dead.
But same people who do not know the meaning of Humanity & God, always rush to the Temples frequently and spend huge money on Poojas or ready to fight on communal lines in the name of God & Religion.

If they were afraid of further explosion of Gas then why they went near the victims to take their Photo on mobile? For taking photo the onlookers have no fear, but for giving water they fear further explosion ?

Ravi, how many of us take initiative to take accident victims to the hospital ? We just leave them to bleed on the road and only sympathise about their death later. If 108 comes late, all are ready to fight with the driver, throwing stones at hospital blaiming their 'negligence'. Its high time to form a group to help accident victims 24x7 like blood donors group. Requesting youth to form such group instead of doing moral policing please.
