Moga molestation: Victim cremated, Punjab CM meets family

Updated

Moga (Punjab), May 3 (IANS): The 13-year-old girl who died after she was molested and pushed out of a bus owned by Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal's transport company was cremated on Sunday evening at her native village in Punjab. Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, who met the girl's family on Sunday evening, said the incident was "very unfortunate".

The cremation took place amid tight security by Punjab Police. The body was brought by her family from the Faridkot Medical College and Hospital where her post-mortem examination was conducted on Sunday evening.

Parkash Singh Badal met the victim's family in Moga town on Sunday evening, four days after the girl died.

Badal said the incident was "very unfortunate" and directed the director general of police (DGP) to ensure proper security for women in public transport.

"I came here as the father of Arshdeep Kaur. As the chief minister of the state and a father figure, I am personally responsible for safeguarding the honour of every daughter of Punjab. Wherever someone tries to outrage the honour of Punjab's daughter, he will be given exemplary punishment under the strictest provisions of the law," Badal told the media after spending about 30 minutes with the victim's family.

The father of the girl and some members of her family had earlier said they agreed to the post-mortem examination.

"I want to take my daughter back home and cremate her. Please let me go now," the victim's father told the media here.

Moga Deputy Commissioner Parminder Singh Gill also said the family had agreed to the post-mortem examination and cremation.

"The post mortem is important as it is a crucial piece of evidence related to the death of the victim," he said.

Official sources said the government paid a compensation of Rs.24 lakh to the victim's family and promised to provide a government job to her mother who was also pushed out of the bus and seriously injured.

Chaos prevailed at the Civil Hospital complex in Moga town on Sunday afternoon as the local authorities and police tried to get the consent of the family.

Heavy police deployment was made outside and inside the hospital complex as scores of people protested the authorities' bid to pressurise the family to give its consent for a post-mortem examination followed by cremation.

Though the Dalit girl died on Wednesday evening, the family had refused to allow her autopsy and cremation till the owners of the Orbit Aviation transport company, implying Sukhbir Badal and others, were booked. The row continued for the past three days.

Protesters, including Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) activists, alleged that the authorities and police under pressure from the Badal family had coerced the victim's father to give consent for the autopsy and cremation.

The victim, her mother and brother had boarded the bus at Moga town for Baghapurana town, which is 20 km away, on Wednesday evening.

The mother and daughter were soon targeted with indecent gestures and molestation by some goons on the bus. When the mother and daughter resisted, the molesters, including three bus staff, pushed them out of the speeding vehicle.

The girl died immediately while the mother was admitted to a hospital in a serious condition.

Following pressure from various quarters, police arrested four people, including three staff members of Orbit transport company. They were booked for murder, attempt to murder and molestation.

Buses of the Orbit transport company were taken off the roads in Punjab on Saturday following orders from Sukhbir Badal.

Caught on camera: Bus brazenly violated rules minutes before teen was pushed out

Moga (Punjab), May 3 (NDTV): Four days after a teenage girl died after she was molested and then pushed off a moving bus in Punjab's Moga district, CCTV footage has emerged of the bus being driven recklessly on a highway, just minutes before the incident.

In the video, the bus is seen speeding on the four-lane Moga-Kotkapura highway before dangerously swerving to the right, narrowly avoiding a collision with a tractor which was coming from the opposite direction.

The bus then halts on the opposite lane and picks up the cleaner Amar Ram who alongwith three others - including the conductor - later allegedly abused and groped the 14-year-old girl and her mother before throwing them off the bus.

This bus, belonging to Orbit Aviation which is co-owned by Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal's family, had tinted windows and curtains, in blatant violation of rules.

Amid massive political protests over the minor's death and allegations that the company's buses often flouted rules, the Deputy Chief Minister yesterday ordered all buses to be taken off roads till the completion of an orientation course for the firm's bus operating staff.

The Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party have demanded that the company be shut down, referencing the Uber case - the service was banned in Delhi for a brief period after a woman passenger was raped allegedly by a cab driver in December last year.

The father of the teen, who has not been cremated by the family in protest, has demanded a case against Sukhbir Singh Badal.

But officials said that no case could be made out against the owners of the company which runs the bus.

"If a person has no knowledge about the crime, then how can he be booked? And it is also not legally possible," Moga Deputy Commissioner Parminder Singh Gill told reporters.

Finally some solace for the dead and the entire family. The body of the girl is now cremated and the bereaved family is promised by the Punjab CM of Rs 24 Lakh compensation and government job for the mother. I know, this is nothing against the loss of their loving daughter…, but something to console the entire family. Otherwise, these political parties will play their cards for their own benefit and the victim’s family will get nothing. Well, now it’s the turn of the Congress & AAP to support the victim’s family in getting the promised compensation from the chief minister & the ruling government.

One more thing to be noted here that, there is much more hatred within among Hindus in the name of upper cast – lower cast – Brahmin – dalith etc., etc. I think, all the so called Moral Police, Bajrang Dal, Rama Sena, Shiva Sena, RSS and so on…, should take this issue and should try to eradicate this social evil from within Hinduism rather than fighting against Love Jihad, attacking Churches, pubs, cattle trafficking etc.

What murder. Murder is already taken place. No one is above the law. Put the bus company of the road instantly. Hang those four criminal goons. NO BAIL PLEASE, JUST HANG THEM IMMEDIATELY. They have murdered an innocent young soul. What a criminal act, if they are left free, tomorrow some else will die this way. Jai Hind.

Whether it is Punjab or Gujarat or South India, the Dalits have no honour and respect anywhere in India. In Punjab also dalits are easily recognized due to their dark skin and they face humiliation every where whether they are Sikh-dalits or Hindu-Dalits, which I have seen myself when I was working in Punjab for 3 years.
Today on the Birth day of Gautam Budha all dalits should know that only Lord Budha can relieve them from this hell.

You are right Ramakrishna Mangalore. The Bus staff came to know that the Victims are Dalits from their appearance and then started misbehaving with them thinking that being Dalits they will tolerate every thing. But when the Victims protested they were thrown out by upper caste conductors. All other passengers also did not interfere to save them because the victims were dalits.

PM Modi has no time to think about women's safety in India, because he and his Media agents are fully busy hogging fake publicity for Nepal Relief. He even went to the extent of lying that it was he (Modi) who informed Nepal PM about earth quake first and till then Nepal PM was unaware of this disaster. This was the height of Feku-giri and self-aggrandizing and self-publicity by Modi .

What Next? Citizens are fed up of inaction despite such evidence. Will Justice be seen to be done because of the compulsions of Coalition politics of BJP & Akali dal??? Both these parties have men/women with the gift of the gab - They suppress truth and suggest falsehood through their statements and claim it is GOD'S WILL. Who is their God - PM or CM of Punjab?
