Mumbai, Jul 31: Actress Lara Dutta's first look as Queen Kaikeyi in Nitesh Tiwari's upcoming film Ramayana has sparked mixed reactions on social media, with viewers divided over the character's costume and styling.
The discussion began after the release of the film's latest trailer, where Lara Dutta appears in a simple two-toned saree paired with a green blouse and a maroon drape with a gold border. Her straight, side-parted hairstyle, red bindi and minimal jewellery have drawn attention, with many questioning whether the look suits the epic's Treta Yuga setting.

While some viewers praised the understated appearance, others criticised it for looking too modern. One social media user commented, "Modern saree, salon-styled side-combed hair… is this Treta Yuga or 2026?"
The reactions underline the intense scrutiny surrounding the film's visual interpretation of the Ramayana, particularly its costumes, production design and character portrayals.
Kaikeyi is one of the epic's most pivotal characters, whose decisions ultimately lead to Lord Ram's exile and shape the central narrative of the story.
Although Lara Dutta's role has only been briefly showcased in the trailer, her appearance has already generated discussions about historical authenticity and the creative choices made by the filmmakers.
Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Ramayana will be released in two parts. The first instalment is scheduled for a worldwide release ahead of Diwali in October 2026, while the second part is slated for release during Diwali 2027.
The film stars Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi, Sunny Deol, Ravie Dubey and Yash in key roles.
