Mangalore, Mar 30: A total of 44 gram panchayats of the district have been short-listed for Nirmal Gram Awards by the central government. Incidentally the credit should go to the members of the DK Gram Panchayat Secretaries Association.

Sampoorna Swachatha Andolana is the voluntary work replicated in the phased manner in Golthamajalu, Perne, Sajipamoda, Manchi, Kurnadu and six other gram panchayats. Sampoorna Swachata Andolana also includes building low cost toilets, keeping the city clean, tidy and hygienic.

Ira gram panchayat secretary and association member Chandrashekar Pathoor said, ‘Success and awards are not owing to the hard-work of individual but it is the dedication of the team work.’

The Sampoorana Swachata Andolana was launched in October 2005 and it is has been implemented in almost 65 GPs of DK district. 

The government appointed a team to evaluate the gram panchayats and a report listing the panchayats eligible for the award.  This report would be sent to the state government and then it will be forwarded to the centre to dispatch the claims to the team.

The panchayats will receive the award and a cash prize of Rs 3-5 lac from the President of India A P J Abdul Kalam in New Delhi on April 23.
