Delhi minister Tomar seeks stay on bar council proceedings

New Delhi, May 26 (IANS): Delhi Law Minister Jitender Singh Tomar on Tuesday urged the high court to stay the proceedings of the Bar Council of Delhi (BCD) initiated against him in an alleged "fake law degree" case.

Approaching the high court, senior advocate A.S. Chandhiok who appeared for Tomar mentioned the case before Justice Rajiv Shakdher who posted the matter for Wednesday.

Chandhiok said BCD should give more time to Tomar to file certified copies of his degrees.

He further told the court that BCD has not provided him copy of the inquiry report against him, adding that the report has been forwarded to the Delhi Police instead of giving him.

Two cases are pending against Tomar in the high court, alleging that he had enrolled himself as an advocate on the basis of a "fake and bogus" graduation degree while the other plea sought cancellation of his election.

Bihar's Tilak Manjhi Bhagalpur University, from where Tomar claimed to have obtained his law degree, had earlier told the court that the provisional certificate is not "genuine" and the document "does not exist in the university's record".

The serial number of the provisional certificate in the record showed the name of some other person and not that of Tomar, said the university.

The BCD had also initiated an inquiry into the matter and issued notice to Tomar seeking his response.
