Mangalore, Apr 12: "Nurses have the responsibility to work towards the society," said Oommen Chandy, former chief minister and leader of opposition, government of Kerala.

Speaking after inaugurating the new campus for Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences and inaugurating the 11th graduation ceremony of the college at Derlakatte on Thursday April 12, he said that Malayali nurses are well reputed across the world. There is a need to retain the same reputation, said he.

Recalling that his daughter Maria was the B.Tech student of Nitte, he opined that the heads of Nitte institutions are striving to build the society through excellence.

Parents in Kerala go through a detailed enquiry before sending their children for study to the out-station colleges. But when it comes to Nitte institutions there is nothing to worry about.  The very name Nitte is enough to send their children here without any enquiry, he added.

President of the function N Vinay Hegde said “You have to show that, you are the people of excellence. Only excellence will set you apart from other graduates in today’s world”.

He further added that parents make a great deal of sacrifices for the betterment of their children. “So this is the time for you to pay back the debt," he advised.  KSHEMA dean Dr Shantaram Shetty was present.

Sabita Nayak led the graduation ceremony. Molly C Pinto administered the oath to the students. Principal Meera K Pillai welcomed the gathering. Vice-principal Fatima D'Silva proposed vote of thanks.

A total of 47 B.Sc nursing students and 5 M.Sc students were awarded degrees on this occasion.
