China beat Netherlands 1-0 in Women's World Cup

Edmonton (Canada), Jun 12 (IANS): Wang Lisi scored a last-minute goal to award China a deserved 1-0 win over the Netherlands in their second round of group games at the Women's World Cup.

The 24-year-old midfielder rushed to a long pass from teammate Tan Ruyin and fired the ball past Van Veenendaal at the 90th minute during the match on Thursday, Xinhua news agency reported.

The Dutch goalkeeper put on an inspiring performance to stop China from scoring.

Tang Jiali nearly put China ahead at the 66th minute with a powerful shot which hit the bar.

Substitute Ma Jun came close at the 86th minute when she tapped high a perfect pass from Tang.

The Netherlands' best chance came at the 61st minute as winger Manon Melis burst into the box, only to see her shot held by Chinese goalkeeper Wang Fei.

China, who enjoyed 69 percent of ball possession before the break, seemed to run out of steam later in the second half. But Wang's goal put them back on track.

China, who lost 1-0 to Canada in the World Cup opener, will play against New Zealand on Monday.
