Mangalore, Apr 24: The government should stop the exploitation of open spaces and wetlands in the name of development, said office-bearers of three different organizations while addressing a press conference here on Monday April 23.

Members of Dakshina Kannada Parisarasaktha Okkoota, Corporation Bank Officers’ Organization (CBOO) and Save Kadri Campaign demanded that the government should manage public property and natural resources of the city and surrounding areas professionally.

They also alleged that the river banks have been encroached by private parties but the administration is turning a blind eye. Even the Coastal Regulatory Zone (CRZ) has not taken any action, they said.

They further alleged that the administration has failed to implement the provisions under Karnataka Parks, Playfields and Open Spaces (Preservation and Regulation) Act 1985 which calls for preservation of spaces for recreational purposes but instead the open spaces have become dumping yards, they said.

The organizations also plan to seminar on ‘Save Kadri Park’ will be held at CBOO office on Wednesday April 25 at 5.30 pm.

Among those present were Okkoota office bearers Vittal Rao Kinya, Upendra Hosabettu, Suresh Shetty, Vishnu Nayak, CBOO members T R Bhat, Prakash and others.
