Mangalore, Apr 27: A workshop on ‘Integrated Coastal Zone Management Plan’ (ICZMP) organized by the department of Applied Mechanics and Hydraulics and department of Chemical Engineering, National Institute of Technology (NITK), Suratkal was held at NITK premises here on Thursday April 26.

Speaking after inaugurating the workshop, deputy commissioner M Maheshwar Rao said that the city is going to witness rapid development in all spheres particularly in service industry and infrastructure and expressed his concern over the harmful affects on the environment as a result of these changes.

NITK will be opening its three technical centres in the city. While the first center would take up research activities on sustainable development integrating locally available resources and human resources, the second centre with deal with material technology and the third would be concerned with disaster management.

NITK director Prof Sandeep Sancheti presided over the programme.

New Mangalore Port Trust chairman P Tamilvanan addressed the valedictory ceremony and said that the coastal structures are important for the economy and also lauded the Institute for organizing a work shop on ICZMP.
