Mangalore, Apr 27: In view of the recent stay order issues by the Supreme Court on reservation for OBC’s in IIMs and IITs, the Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts Federation of Backward Classes has submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister urging the revocation of the stay order.

The memorandum stated that the though the Constitution was adopted 57 years ago, social equality is still missing and justice has not reached the poor and downtrodden who belong to the backward classes.

The members alleged in the memorandum that the reservations in employment under article 16(4) and the reservation in educational institutions under article 15(4) of the Constitution was not being followed by IIMs and IITs thus denying entry to the backward classes.

Though the central government passed an order to introduce 27% reservation to OBCs in IITs and IIMs, the Supreme Court has stayed the order thus denying social justice to exploited, majority population of the country. The memorandum also termed the Supreme Court order as ‘against the aims and objectives of the writs of the Constitution.’ 

A statistics of IIMs states that students from backward classes constitute not even 5 % of the total number of students in the institutes, the memorandum stated.

The memorandum urged the Prime Minister to take up the matter with the Supreme Court and vacate the stay order while also urging the introduction of reservation from the academic year 2007-08.
