Shimoga, Apr 28: Since 1757 till now, country has suffered loss of around 90 lakh crore due to cow slaughter, said Rajiv Dixit of Swadeshi Andolan.

Speaking at the Vishwa Go-Sammelan being held at Ramachandrapur Mutt in Hosanagar on Friday, he said that this amount is equal to the 12 five year plans take up in the country. Every year, cattle of worth Rs 75,000 are slaughtered mercilessly.

During the rule of Britishers cow slaughter was increased. They introduced cow slaughters as to check economic growth of people in the country. Britishers planned it so well that they appointed Muslims to slaughter cow at butcher shops. This gave a picture that people belonging to that community were doing this crime, he said.

There are about 3600 butcher shops in India, which kills cattle worth Rs 2.50 crore. Kerala leads in cow slaughter. Tamil Nadu stands second. Karnataka exports cow meat to other states, he said.

A cow earns a profit of Rs 40 lakh, if it is kept alive and reared properly. People need to know about these facts and take up farming than supply cattle for butcher shops, he pointed out.
