Beltangady, Apr 29: Shubhananda Sherigar, a young man hailing from Manjaltottu near Naravi, died of a lightning strike on Friday evening.

He had recently secured an employment in Mumbai and had come to his native village. He is said to have been sitting in a chair, carrying a baby but the tiny tot had a providential escape, absolutely unhurt.

Areas on the boundary between Karkala and Beltangady taluks had heavy thunder-showers accompanied by gales. A tree fell on the house of Yuvaraj Jain in Hosmar bazar resulting in its partial collapse. His son was hit by lightning but is out of danger, reports said.

A tree crashed on the house of panchayat member Damodar Pai resulting in a total blackout in Nooralbettu village.

Puttur report:

Heavy losses to agricultural and landed property have been reported from Shiradi area between Puttur and Beltangady taluks. Rubber plantations have been damaged in over a dozen places, revenue officials have said.
