Mangalore, April 30: The monthly Dalits' grievances hearing meet was held at the police guest house here on Sunday April 29.

During the meet, a historic decision was taken to relax the regulations related to the applications for appointment of family members of SC/ST persons who die following atrocities against them.

The new amendment to the legislation relaxes the rules regarding the educational qualification of the family members of the SCs/STs, who can now apply for any group D post, on compassionate grounds.

According to previous rule, the members applying for the jobs were required to have a minimum qualification of class 8, but the present amendment nullifies such a requirement.

The family members can apply for the benefit within a period of one year from the date of amendment of the rules 2006.

The purpose of the meet was being diverted because some of the members complained that certain Dalit leaders were trying to personalize the issues in the name of grievances of Dalits. In response to this, SP Dayanand told the members to bring out issues that may have any importance to the larger section of the community, but not to unnecessarily discuss ‘personal’ issues at the meet.

SP B S Lokesh Kumar; DySPs BP Heraje, BD D’Souza and D Dharmaiah were also present at the meet.
