Mangalore, Apr 30: Pavoor-Uliya, an island located about 10 kilometres away from the city has a serious connectivity problem, said Sr Evelyn, director of Family Service Agency of Roshni Nilaya.
She was speaking at the press conference held on Monday April 30.
The island has a total of 45 houses and about 180 residents. It also has school which provides education up to class 4. But for their further studies, the students have to cross Netravati river and come either to the city or move towards Banwtal. But come rainy season and the students as well as those who go for work have thousands problems as it is very tough to cross river when it is flowing in full swing.
A ferry boat is the only means of transportation here. The boat stops its service at sharp 7 pm. In case of emergency, the inhabitants here have to struggle between life and death. The flooded river makes their living condition worse in the monsoon season, she said
People of this island have tried various ways and means to sort this problem out. The people are united for the cause and political leaders at different levels have been contacted. As a result Rs 2 lac was sanctioned by Zilla Panchayat. With this amount, few loads of granite boulders have been dumped in the river to make a path. Though this entire amount has been utilized, it has in no way helped in fulfilling the purpose, she explained.
The inhabitants here also tried to contact Infosys and other institutions to get help to establish either a hanging bridge or any other means of connection. The generous support of the various institutions is very essential today, Sr Evelyn requested.
Anita, Ganeshmurthy, Prashant Ferrao and Aurelle D’Souza were also present at the press conference.
