Blast in Kuwait mosque - Toll rises to 25, IS claims responsibility

Updated

Kuwait City, Jun 26 (IANS): At least 25 people were killed and at least 202 others wounded on Friday in a suicide bomb attack on a Shia mosque which the Islamic State (IS) militant group claimed responsibility for, media reports said.

The blast rocked the Imam Al-Sadeq Mosque, located in the busy neighbourhood of al-Sawabir of the capital city, Xinhua reported citing the official Kuwait News Agency.

Kuwait's interior ministry said that 25 people were killed and at least 202 others were injured in the blast, which occurred when a large number of Muslims were offering Friday prayers inside the Mosque.

Kuwaiti Emir Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah visited the mosque, located just a few buildings away from the country's interior ministry.

An emergency session of parliament has also been called, an Al Jazeera report said.

Meanwhile, Saad al-Ajmi, Kuwait's former information minister, told Al Jazeera that the attack was a reminder that no country was "immune from terrorism".

Ajmi said Kuwait had "a good record" in its relationship between Sunni and Shia groups, and was a small country with good security without widespread dissent.

However, if a group was responsible, he said: "I think that those who want to tip the whole region ablaze in a sectarian war would be behind this attack because that is their agenda."

The attack was designed to threaten national security, and break national unity, said Yaaqoub al-Sanae, Kuwait's minister of Awqaf and Islamic affairs.

"Kuwait will remain an oasis of security for all groups of Kuwaiti society and all sects. The government is taking many procedures to protect prayers and mosques," al-Sanea told Kuwait's state news agency KUNA.

The explosion was the first suicide bombing attack on a Shia mosque in the Gulf Arab state, where Sunnis and Shia live side by side with little apparent friction.

If proven to be true, then it was not the first time for the IS group to plot and carry out such attacks against Shia mosques. It has claimed responsibility for bombings at two different Shia mosques in neighbouring Saudi Arabia in recent weeks.

On March 20, IS suicide bombers also attacked two mosques in Yemen's capital Sanaa and Houthi headquarters in the northern Saada province, killing at least 137 people in the attacks, the most deadliest in Yemen for decades.

Casualties were expected to grow as Friday prayers have always been the most attended of the week, while the number of people joining the prayers would increase during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan that started on June 18 in the Gulf countries.

ISIS is stronger than Al Quaida..I told about them in my previous comments many times..I don't think any country can control them 100%..Even US have clueless about ISIS..It is little bit sigh of relief that Indian Muslims are not like others..They are educated and patient too. That is why inspite of ISIS strong attempt, they could not reach Indian Muslims..Only few youngsters attracted to ISIS (without the knowledge of their parents)..Hope,ISIS FAIL in India as long as Indian Muslims get United..Anyway,now all Fridays give tension to religious Muslim devotees because of this ISIS Devils..

ISIS is an Israeli creation? just get up and look around.
When Bahraini shia people who are in majority were up against the government, who put down the revolt? Was it not Saudi?
Same way while sunni people who are in majority in Syria were against Syrian government who supported the revolt, is it not Saudi?
Why there is different scenarios for both? Now in Yemen, where Shia and Sunnis are equal in proportions, who bombs Yemens poor people, Is it not Saudi?
It is Saudi Arabia who breed terrorism from the beginning, whether it started from Afghanistan, to put down Russian backed government, whether it is for Israel to get back Palestine totally.
    These things happened since 1960s.
Now Saudi Arabia has fully supported Wahabism, similar to Salafi teachings, which are closer to ISIS.
The region will reap what it sowed, when you cultivate bitter melons, you wont get back sweeter melons.

Ofcourse USA and Israel are really benefiting what the region sowed, and they are having gala time.
It is a big mess that has been created and there is no turn back.

Finally !! I was wondering why nobody is blaming US or Israel. If you have read a bit of history, there has been blood letting in Arab world since time immemorial. No US or Israel existed that time. The main reason for this never ending conflict is the inherent thirst for blood, fuelled by scriptures and God men. Ideology and US are only an excuse. Nobody can help these people as long as they believe in eye for an eye and tooth for a tooth theory glorified by their religious leaders.

Conflicts differs from violence. Give me a single bomb blast in mosque prior to the occupation of iraq. Do you know the living standard of christians in iraq post invasion ? Christians were safe during saddam regime. Dont you think its the USA who makes the way for the worst? Even in chritianity conflicts between catholics protestants and racism at large. But now they find democratic laws which treat everyone equally not good enough and they are now asking for Sharia. Apparently muslims are not happy in Ghaza, Egypt,Libya,Morocco,Iran,Iraq,Yemen,Afghanistan,Pakistan,Syria and in Lebanon. But happy in US, Australia,England,France,Italy,Germany,Sweden,Canada & of course in India. Surprisingly, they’re happy in almost every country that is not Islamic. And who do they blame?
    - Not Islam
    - Not their leadership
    - Not themselves
And they find the blame with the countries that they are happy in.
And furthermore, they want to change the countries they’re happy in, to be like the countries that they came from where they were unhappy. This is really pathetic.

    People,

    Very sad incident.

I lived in Kuwait from 1985-2000 and seen this mosque in Kuwait City.

Kuwaiti's local population is 20% Shia and 80% Sunni...most shia's speak Parsi in their home and are originally from Iran...

Most of the Shia Kuwaiti's are educated and well behaved,,, mostly in Government Service or in business..

There are always attempts to split Kuwaiti's in sectarian ways since long...ruling Sabha family even Sunni are very careful and don't take sides publicly...

Looks like ISIS is bringing their war to Kuwait from neighboring Iraq which is less than 150 KMs away...

There are about a million Indian's working in Kuwait...hope and pray this incident will not destabilize Kuwait and effect poor Indians working there...

Sectarian Violence is bad for Islam and also any other religion... These killings are for very silly reasons..

Interestingly Shia - Sunni conflict is very low in India. Infact more than 12 sects of Islam live in India without much issues within them...

Every religion has suffered Sectarian issues.. Hinduism had Shaiva-Vaishnava issues, Chatur varna issues, Arya-Dravida issues. Christianity dealt with bloody Anglican-Catholic, Protestant-Catholic, Mormon vs. rest of the sects.....

Both Christianity and Hinduism already came out of this Sectarian issues. May be, Islam being a new religion compared to all, it may soon come out of this one day.....

Why people of the same religious faith fight each other? Years back in Ireland, the Catholics and the Protestants killed each other while they have the same LORD
    JESUS CHRIST.

I read in a some news papers that the Muslims and Jewish people of India never had any friction and they were good neighbors.

GOD IS LOVE, and that loving GOD must reign in our personal lives, until then this bitter problems of hatred and bloodshed can't be eradicated.
