No charging for check-in baggage, for now: Govt

New Delhi, Jun 27 (PTI): Putting its weight firmly behind passengers, government today said it has, as of now, rejected budget carriers' plea to allow them to charge for check-in baggage.

Confirming that airlines had approached the aviation regulator Director General of Civil Aviation for its nod, Minister of State for Civil Aviation Mahesh Sharma said the government has not accepted the request at this stage as it would put additional burden on the passengers.

"We have got the proposal from low-cost flights to charge for check-in baggage. We have rejected it and there will be no consideration at the Aviation Ministry level. We will not want to put this burden on passengers," Sharma told a private TV news channel.

Sharma, however, said that his ministry has asked the airlines to send a detailed proposal on the issue and if it is found in the interest of the passengers, it may consider it.

When contacted, a SpiceJet official said, "We have not made the plea since the March 2015 circular of the DGCA, allowing the airlines to unbundle services.

"Have not heard about it (government rejecting airlines plea)," an AirAsia India official said in his response when asked for his reaction on the matter.

IndiGo spokesperson could not immediately be contacted for his response.

Low-cost carriers IndiGo, AirAsia India and SpiceJet - had some time back approached the regulator with the idea of 'zero baggage fare', whereby passengers having no check-in luggage would be given a discount on the ticket.

The proposed move was aimed at doing away with the current practice of passengers being allowed to carry up to 15 kg of check-in luggage free of cost.

In April this year, DGCA had allowed domestic carriers to unbundle their services and charge separately for facilities such as preferred seats, meals-on-board and use of lounge.

The 'zero baggage fare' plan, part of efforts to unbundle the services offered by airlines, was being examined by DGCA, an official had said yesterday.

"We want to have a uniform system for all airlines before deciding on when and how to implement the proposal," the official had said.

It's senseless if budget airlines have asked for check-in-luggage charges. They are making enormous amount of profits as the oil prices have almost become half. The Indian Civil Aviation and the Internation Civil Aviation should look into this matter and make the airlines to reduce the price of tickets to half. Passengers are not getting the benifit of price
reduction, on the contrary the budget airlines want to make more profit by charging for the check-in-luggage, it's unfair and rediculous.

You are correct. If the airlines are permitted to charge for the bag, then they will be adding more to the list and even small charges/ item, when added can make a lot of profit running over the defenseless passengers. How many such charges are introduced to the Airlines industry in the U.S. is too many to count now.

Domestic sector if Airline gang up against passengers it could be but in international sector it is highly impossible because there are cut throat competition.Civil Aviation ministry instead of soliciting such unwanted odd passenger policy ,need to give private operators some sops like discounting Hanger/Parking price etc..
