Monchengladbach, July 13 (IANS): HSV Hamburg overcame FC Augsburg 2-1 in the Telekom Cup final to win the pre-season German football tournament in front of 50,123 spectators here.

Hamburg won the seventh edition of the pre-season tournament as the HSV on Sunday defeated Augsburg 2-1 in the final meanwhile Borussia Monchengladbach upset Bayern Munich in a penalty shoot-out to secure the third spot, Xinhua reported on Sunday.

The Telekom Cup was held for the seventh time. The starting field consisted of this year's host Monchengladbach, Bayern, Hamburg and Augsburg. In the tournament, each game lasts 45 minutes.

Hamburg earned their spot in the final with a 4-5 victory at the penalty shoot-out over hosts Monchengladbach. Meanwhile, Augsburg shocked Bayern with a 2-1 comeback win to book the last ticket for the final. Things went from bad to worse for Pep Guardiola's men, who lost the battle for the third place 3-4 on penalties against Monchengladbach.

Hamburg brought the Telekom Cup home with two goals within 32 minutes. Midfielder Mohamed Gouaida broke the deadlock with just two minutes into the game following a through ball by Ivica Olic. Augsburg's Raphael Framberger doubled the lead for Hamburg with an own goal in the 32nd minute.

Augsburg were able to reduce the arrears through Tim Matavz, who capitalised on a misplaced return pass to beat onrushing Hamburg's goalkeeper Tom Mickel in the 41st minute.

However, Hamburg were able to protect their 2-1 lead to the end to lift the trophy.

"We wanted to win the tournament and we did. There are still some things to improve," Hamburg head coach Bruno Labbadia said.

The Bundliga kicks off on August 15 with the North-South clash Bayern against Hamburg.
