Maharashtra Likely to Finalise Plan on Ambedkar Memorial

Mumbai, August 30 (PTI): Maharashtra government is likely to finalise within two weeks the plan for the creation of a world-class memorial to Dalit icon BR Ambedkar on the Indu Mills plot in Central Mumbai with around Rs. 600 crore to be spent on the works.

"The state Cabinet has given the right to finalise the proposal to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis," Finance Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar said today.

Mr Fadnavis will soon decide on one out of the two presentations that have been submitted, he added.

He said that renowned architect Shashi Prabhu and another architect from outside the country had last week made a presentation before the finance department, which will now be put before the state Cabinet in the coming week.

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi has instructed that the memorial should be world-class stature and we are working on that," the minister said.

"According to the plan by two companies, the memorial will cost around Rs. 600 crore and we are ready to allocate money, whatever the amount. Once the chief minister gives the go ahead to the proposal, we will call for bids for the memorial," Mr Mungantiwar said.

Meanwhile, an official said that the memorial will be such that it would attract tourists from across the globe.

The main memorial will have a dome-like stupa structure and a circle would be constructed around it which would serve as a prayer place for followers of Dr Ambedkar who had embraced Buddhism by renouncing Hinduism, the official said.

"There will be a museum in the vicinity where articles related to Dr Ambedkar's life will be placed in a systematic manner," he said, adding that since Dr Ambedkar was a voracious reader, an open library will be facilitated for visitors who will get to read books at the memorial site.

"Another library will include books written by Dr Ambedkar and on him by other authors that would be available for purchase as well," the official said.

He added that a three-dimensional theatre will be built to showcase important incidents associated with the life of the architect of the Indian Constitution.

"This will be in the form of a documentary which will make it seem as if it is happening for real," the official said. Maharashtra government this week completed the formalities to acquire a bungalow in London where the Dalit icon had lived as a student in the 1920s.

The 10, King Henry's Road townhouse in north London was acquired in a 3.1-million deal.

its a high time for India to put an end to all this memorials, erecting statues, naming streets on persons name. what is needed is
    1. when they are alive honor them for their contribution to justice, peace and development
    2. once they pass out of this world imbibe their values, put them in school cariculams
    3. use the money planned for memorials for education, health, scholarship
we have so much riots, law n order situation in the name of memorials. tomorrow one will go and place slippers on the statues, destroy the name plates of streets n roads then you have bandhs, arthals etc. so what we need Indians?
