Pakistan calls 63 juniors for hockey camp


Islamabad, Sep 6 (IANS): Pakistan has summoned 63 top field hockey players for the training and trials camp being held for the upcoming Sultan of Johor Junior Invitational Tournament in Malaysia.

A Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) official on Saturday said the camp of national junior probables preparing for participation in the tournament had started at the Naseer Bunda Hockey Stadium here, Xinhua reported.

"The tournament is scheduled to be held in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, from October 11 to 18. Pakistan wants to send its best team for the event," the official said.

Olympian and Pakistan's former star Tahir Zaman, chief coach of the team, is supervising the camp. Olympian Zeeshan Ashraf and former international Muhammad Irfan will officiate as assistant coaches.

The Sultan of Johor Cup is an annual international Under-21 field hockey tournament held in Malaysia since 2011. It is the only invitational junior hockey competition played at the international level.

Pakistan have participated in all the previous four tournaments but failed to reach the final of any of the events.
