Mangaluru: Restriction on movement of heavy vehicles during rush hours

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Dec 30: The district administration proposes, on experimental basis, to restrict entry of heavy vehicles during heavy traffic hours in the morning and the evening on national highway stretches passing through the jurisdictions of the city, to ease the congestion. The proposed step would be introduced from December 31 onward.

Addressing media persons here on Tuesday December 29, city police commissioner, S Murugan, said that on experimental basis, it is proposed to stop the heavy vehicles from entering the city on the outskirts in both national highways 66 and 75 for half an hour in the morning and again in the evening. He said that specific spots would be earmarked for the purpose at Suratkal and Kotekar on national highway 66 and at Kannur on national highway 75 for parking of these trucks.

He said that the police will withhold these vehicles during dense traffic hours for half an hour, and once the time restrictions are removed, vehicles would be allowed to move ahead.

Dakshina Kannada district deputy commissioner, A B Ibrahim, stressed that this move is being initiated on experimental basis and that future decisions on traffic movement will be based on the advantages and problems encountered during this exercise. He pointed out that this system is already in vogue at Bengaluru and some other cities.

About parking of vehicles and movement of heavy vehicles especially from Ullal to Mangalore-Nanthoor side and from Padil to Mangalore side also from Kottara Chowki to Pumpwell and other sides the public face lot of confusion and experience lot of problems during peak and rush hours. As per the say "BETTER LATE THAN NEVER" The District Administration has taken the rightful decision about bringing restriction to solve this problem. First of Flyovers in such busy areas be provided early. Our City roads have become congested due to parking of vehicles that too in a haphazard manner and also by double parking. Traffic Police have to make frequent visits to important places and try to curb such illegal and double parking. Due to such irregular parking our roads have bec0me so narrow as other road users find it difficult to move about. Further the drain works which are carried out should be completed within th shortest possible time. The District Administration with the co-operation and support of RTO and Police Traffic Department have to do lot of this to solve this tough pproblem.

It is a good decision. But should find out good parking place for these heavy vehicles outside the city. Otherwise, they will park middle of the highway and create traffic chaos. Also to be considered heavy vehicles should not use fast track to be used last track (slow track) in highways. Do not allow bullet tankers (LPG) in day time allow only in night time after 7 PM. While allowing trucks movement after rush hour there should be a control other wise all trucks will move at a time create more traffic chaos. Install sign boards with timings at outskirts of city regarding ban on heavy vehicle movement during rush hours.

The highway should essentially be relocated outside Mangalore city limits. I do not understand the logic of making a port connectivity road to connect pananmbur to Bangalore that takes all its dirty cargo through mangalore city. Is this called planning.
If trucks are banned is there a alternate road?
The existing mangalore Udipi road has been converted into a toll road. Is there a alternative road that people can where they do not have to pay toll?.

one more idea seeing some recommendations... yes, huge parking slots to be built outside city limit. may be near Kottara and pumpwell... all cars can be allowed to park there and city buses to roam inside city continuously. Could be premium conditioned busses... which can provide similar luxury to the people ( including those who usually drive cars ) .. these busses should be run continuously with fixed time gap and pick up / the passengers anywhere they want. Once done with the work, folks can use the same bus , go to these outcity parking bays, pick up their cars and go home... can be a good option also... But the busses with in city limit should be Govt run ones. not the private busses. Bloody they will end up again with completion and all...

A few suggestions which will help improve the traffic condition in Mangalore.

    1) Do not allow cars in City limits during peak hours unless its a car car with a disabled person in it. A bus can carry 50 people while we normally see 2 people in cars.
    2) Create parking spots and Multi level parking units around the city and charge for parking.
    3) Ban street parking in city areas completely. Most traffic blocks are due to someone carelessly parking their vehicle.

I remember there was same / similar rule in action some time back. Nobody knows when that rule was lifted. Any ways, this could contribute to some extent. More than this, a driving discipline to be applied ( at least forcibly ) to all the drivers. Especially, bus drivers, 2 wheelers and Rick drivers. These 3 categories are the most problematic sectors of the traffic issue. Bus drivers think they own the road and all other vehicles should run away leaving them the road, if not allowed, they are ready to chase you away or may kill also to ensure they get the road to rush. 2 wheelers think they are on cycles and hence no traffic rules applied for them. any where, any direction, any style.. zig zak, high speed... chasing...competing with premium cars.. anything they are ok. They just forget that if anything goes wrong they are going to be the victims. Coming to Auto.... ha ha ha .. all auto drivers think themselves as Auto Raja , I mean Shankar Nag or Rajnikanth. Wow, you should see their style, look they give if you come on their way. They are ok to enter any gap in between the vehicles, it may damage your vehicle or it may disturb the passenger inside or people walking on the road... they are not bothered... they are bothered just to rush and proceed. since it has 3 wheels, they think they are driving aeroplanes... If there 3 sectors are given good education on driving discipline... everything will be alright. Above all, the authorities are to be educated how to execute the projects especially on the time line and contractors are to be educated as how clean a project can be executed with minimal public disturbance.

The most important thing to be implemented strictly is the reduced speed limits within city limits.
I do not understand why no one is serious about it.
All the accidents happen because of uncontrollable speed of the vehicle.

They are trying their best. But, this idea may help a little and create traffic blockage outside the city.
    Followings should be considered:-
    1) Dual carriage way having 3 tracks on each side till NITK.
    2) As planned earlier, Service bus stand and a city bus stand attached near Pumpwell. No service buses should enter city.
    3) A flyover at Nantoor junction.
    4) Footpaths all over the city.
    5) Creating parking spaces, Parking Buildings.
    6) Restricting the speed of City buses.
    7) Total ban on honking withing city limits.
    8) No dipper light usage during night within city limits.

Half an hour is too short to see any result.Because after the release of bunch of vehicles at one time will create more jams & chaos .

Heavy vehicles like trucks, buses drivers are using footpath as a road during the peak rush hours, there is no one is questioning them ,these drivers do have little patience to wait few minutes in traffic,
yes this is a good decision by commissioner during school hours and morning and evening entry of heavy vehicles must restricted.
and our people must avoid using 4 wheelers to go to hampankatta just to buy bunch of coriander leaves.

For reducing traffic jams, restricting of heavy vehicles movement in highway and that too at peak hours is not all a good idea.If they do, then heavy vehicles will be parked at road side only, as there are no many parking spots on high way & ultimately this will lead to fatal accidents like which are happening inside the city where people park vehicles side of roads due to non availability of parking space for guests inside the residential flats & even at some commercial places.

this is a very good decision taken by police department . i think its already working in Bangalore city. if its strictly followed it will reduce the traffic blocks and slow moving traffic especially in KPT,Nanthoor and Pumpwell junction. not only heavy trucks this rule should apply even for sand carrying tippers JCB and cement mixers . and should be kept out of rads of city limits from morning 8-10 am and evening 430-7pm

How'bout restricting smaller vehicles like cars, scootys & bikes during peak hours, within city limits? A bus can carry about 60 people, thus preventing around 60 two wheelers or 30 cars on an average per bus. That would definitely bring down the noise & air pollution levels in the city.

This shortcut solution is likely to create more problems than giving any relief. There will be long line of heavy vehicles waiting at either end of restriction point causing further nuisance to light vehicles.
Police in Mangalore are well known for adopting shortcuts like this and fail to achieve what they intend to. If at all they want to do some fruitful work, let them discipline the traffic at intersection points such as Nanthroor junction, pumpwell etc.

By adding restrictions such as creating one way stretches, not allowing vehicle parking etc., they don't achieve anything. It is only a temporary solution and hardship to users.
